Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed June 18, 1904. Serial No. 213,068.
To a/ZZ whom it 1v1/ay concern.:
Be it known that I, LoUIsA HEILMANN, a citizen of' the French Republic, residing at Paris, in the Department of' the Seine, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reversing Turbines, ofl which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a turbine in which steam is introduced bythe central core 1 of cylindrical form, which is fixed and forms an intrinsicA part with the outer casing 2, which also is cylindrical and fixed.
Figure 1 is alongitudinal sectional view of the turbine. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View through the blades adapted for normal operation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the blades adapted for reverse rotation.
The central fixed core 1 carries distributing or directing channels 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, arranged circumferentially in one or more series or layers 11, 12, 13, and 14. The central fixed core 1 is surrounded by a movable drum 15, which carries receptive blades 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, and 23. The steam in passing by the distributing or directing channels of' the central fixed core 1 operates upon the receptive blades of' the movable drum 15 and causes this movable drum 15 to turn, which transmits the force generated by the steam through its extremity 24, which thus becomes ashaf't for power transmission. Y This shaft is guided in a journal provided with step-rings 25, this movable drum 15 being maintained in position by the journals 26, 27, and 28.
The steam is directed through one or the other series of layers l1 and 12 against the corresponding blade in the outer rotating casing, and from thence the steam passes inwardly through the central annular recess and again into the fixed core, from whence it is led through either of the passages 13 or 14 against the corresponding blades of the rotating casing, and finally out through the annular passage terminating in an exit-pipe at the bottom of the casing.
The series or layers of' distributing or directing channels and receptive blades are double or in pairs, one of the pairs or layers having the channels and receptive blades curved to the-right, while the other pair or series of layers has the channels and blades curved to the left, Figs. 2 and 3. The steam is introduced at pleasure into one or the other of these series or layers of' channels directed,
respectively, to the left or the right by means ofthe cylindrical distributing- valve 29,30, and 31. This valve in the shape of a movable lantern travels inside the central fixed core 1 of cylindrical form, already referred to,by means of an operating mechanism 32. The movement of this valve permits at pleasure the admission of' the steam into either of the layers of curved channels bent to the left or into those layers of' channels which are bent to the right by opening or closing the orifices of admission of the steam 33, 34, 35, and 36, thus causing the movable drum 15 to turn in one direction or in the other. This arrangement permits then the reversing of rotation in one direction or the other directly by the alternative distribution of' the steam. The turbine may be employed either with steam or with water, and it may be arranged for the use of steam either in simple, double, or triple expansion.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention and in whatmanner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim as my invention, and what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A steam-turbine comprising a stationary central core, vanes or passages in said core, said vanes or passages being arranged in two series pointing in opposite tangential directions from the core, a rotatable casing surrounding said core and having corresponding vanes or passages, and means for directing the steam through either desired series.
2. A turbine comprising a stationary core having a series of vanes or passages therein,
a second series of vanes or passages disposed in a tangential direction opposite to that of the first-named vanes or passages, a rotatable casing having vanes or passages arranged to correspond with the vanes or passages on the core, and a valve Within the core for directing the steam through either of said series of' vanes or passages.
3. A turbine comprising a stationary core, a plurality or sets of' vanes or passages in said core, each set being composed of two series directed in opposite tangential directions, a surrounding rotatable casing having vanes or passages to correspond with those in the core, and-means for admitting steam through corresponding series of vanes or passages in bot-h sets in said core.
4. A turbine comprising a stationary core, vanes or passages in said core arranged in two Sets, each set comprising vanes or passages In testimony whereoflhave signed mynanne dlrected in opposite. tangential directions, a to this specification in the presence of two subrotatable surrounding casing having vanes or soriblng Witnesses.
passages to cooperate with those in the core, LOUISA HEILMANN. and a lantern-Valve Within the Core for ad- Witnesses: mitting steam to corresponding series of vanes H ANSON A. COKE,
or passages in both sets in the core. LUCIEN TRESPIN.
