TANK-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,077, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed July 12,1902. Se ial NO- 115,291.
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL REILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Tank-Valve; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in tank-valves for water-closets; and it has, for its object to provide a tank-valve of this character designed to be connected with the float of a closet-tank and adapted to afford ready access to it for repairs and other purposes.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a valve which will be located on the exterior of the tank and which may be readily taken apart without removing the float or the other parts within the tank.
Another object of the invention is to provide an outside float-valve which will be adapted to be employed with any arrangement of float within a tank and which will be equally effective when operating with or against the pressure of the water.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and shown, and particularly pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication, and in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of 'a valve constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a tank. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the valve. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing another form of valve.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the valve or valve-casing, consisting, preferably, of a casting and extending through the bottom of a tank 2 and suitably secured to the same, and the said body, which extends above and below the bottom of thetank, is provided near its upper end with a dischargespout 3, located within the tank, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The lower end of the body or casing, which is tubular, is interiorly threaded for the reception of a removable plug 4, forming a seat 5 for a valve 6, and provided with a passage 7, which communicates with a supply-pipe 8. The lower end of the plug, which is solid, is provided with a projecting polygonal wrenchreceiving portion, whereby the plug may be readily unscrewed, and when the said plug is removed it affords ready access to the valve,
which is also removable. The plug and the valve by being located on the exterior of the tank are adapted to be taken out for repairs or other purposes without removing the bod y or valve-casing 1 from the tank and without entering the latter, which may be constructed of any size, as the smallness of the tank will not in any manner interfere with the operation of repairing the valve or renewing the washer thereof. The supply-pipe, which may be constructed and arranged in any suitable manner, is connected with the lower end of the body or casing of the valve at one side of the same; but it may be connected with the bottom thereof, as hereinafter described. The valve-plug is designed to be provided at the valve-seat with a suitable washer 10, and the valve is provided with a vertical stem 11, fitting within a vertically-movable supplemental rod or stem 12, which is loosely slidable in and guided by the upper end of the body or casing. The loosely-slidable stem 11 is adapted to be readily removed from the casing 1 when the plug is detached, and it is unnecessary to detach the supplemental stem or upper section in order to obtain access to the valve. The intermediate portion 13 of the body or casing has an interior diameter of sufficient size below the upper end 14 of the body or casing to permit the water to flow to the spout 3. The lower portion of the vertically-movable rod or supplemental stem 12 is provided with a bore to receive the valve-stem 11, and the upper portion of the rod 12 is pivotally connected with one arm of the floatlever 15, which is fulcrumed on a short upwardly-extending arm of the body or casing 1.
The float-lever, which may be constructed in any suitable manner and which may be fulcrumed on a support independently of the body. or casing of the valve, is preferably pivoted by a pin 17 in a slot 18 of the verticallymovable rod 12, or it may be loosely arranged in the slot, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The floatlever preferably consists of end sections 19 and 20 and an intermediate rod 21, having its ends threaded in suitable sockets of the end sections. The float-lever is connected at its outer end with an upright guide-rod 22. having its upper portion operating in an opening of a horizontal guide-arm 23 and provided with upper and lower stops 24, between which operates a float 25. The float 25, which is water-tight, is provided with a diametrical opening and is arranged to slide on the upright guide-rod between the stops 24, and when the water in the tank rises sufliciently to carry the float into engagement with the upper stop the outer arm of the float-lever will be lifted and will close the valve and shut off the flow of water to the tank. The guidearm, which receives the guide-rod, is secured to and projects from one of the walls of the tank, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. "When the closet is flushed, the float will fall and engage the lower stop, and thereby open the valve and cause the water to again flow to the tank.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings is illustrated another form of valve, which is provided with a body or casing, mounted on the bottom of the tank, similar to that before described and having its lower end eXteriorly threaded to receive a coupling 26 for connecting a pipesection 27 to the body or casing of the valve. The pipe-section is provided with a valve-seat 28, receiving a washer 29 and adapted to have a valve 30 close upon it. The pipe-section is designed to be connected with a supply-pipe, and it may form a portion thereof, as will be readily understood. The valve is provided with a suitable valve-stem 31, guided in the upper portion of the body or casing and designed to be connected, as before described, with a float-lever. The casing 25 has an interior diameter of sul'licient size to permit the water to pass the valve when the latter is raised. The valve-stem is composed of two sections, the upper section or supplemental stem being provided with an interiorly-threaded bore to receive the upper threaded end of the lower section or valve-stem proper. The float may be connected with the float-lever, as before described, or any other form of float may be used, and I desire it to be understood that these and similar changes within the scope of the appended claim may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a tank, of a valve-casing extending through the bottom of the tank and having its lower portion interiorly and eXteriorly threaded and provided with a lateral opening, the lower end of the valve-casing being open, a sup1 )lypipe communicating with the lateral opening, a removable valve-plug threaded to engage the interior screw-threads of the lower end of the casing and provided at its upper end with a valve-seat and at its lower end with an exterior polygonal wrencl'l-receiving portion, said plug being also provided with an L-shaped passage communicating with the lateral opening of the casing, a spout extending from the upper end of the casing and located within the tank, a valve arranged on the seat and provided with a vertical stem, float mechanism, and a supplemental valve-stem slidable through the top of the casing and provided with a lower tubular portion detachably receiving the stem of the valve to permit the valve to be removed from the casing without uncoupling the float mechanism from the supplemental stem, substantially as described.
