A specilic object is to provide t'orthemovement ot' the door at thelowersideotl the tilted car-body to such d istanee trom the car-body as the door the mechanism at only one end need be described indetail. Obviously the carmay have only one door. Each door is supported by a hinged bar T and a hing'ed bar 8, hinged tothe end ot the door. Said door may be joined to said bars in any suitable manner.

Said body At each end l is pivoted to said members A on the axis 1 by i as the mechanism at one end otl the door is a 1 duplicate ot' the mechanism at the otherend otl l l l From the foregoing description it will be seen that said lifting member controls the adjacent horizontal bar 1T. \\'hen the car-body is in the horizontal position, the. lower end ot each lifting member l5 is a little above the adjacent horizontal plate A ot' the umlertraming, and each such member is suspended lrom the adjacent bar T, and the latter is supported by the hinge/bolt 12 and the adjacent door, the latter resting by its weight upon the l'loor ot` the car-body. \Vhen the carbody is tilted laterally. as shown by Fig. 1 ot' the drawings, the lower end otl the lifting member l5 at the side ot' the car-body which is lowered Soon rests upon the adjacent plate A2 and is thereby prevented from descending further. Hence as the side of the car descends further the adjacent bar 7 and the adjacent door 6 are held against further downward movement, excepting the limited downward movement due to the lowering of the upper end 0f said lifting member by the outward turning of said bar upon its lower end in response to the lateral or outward movement of said bar 7 by the 'lateral movement of the hinge-bolt 12. to which the inner end of said bar is secured.
Chains C, attached to each side of the carbody and the adjacent portions of the underframing of the car, serve to hold the car-.body in the horizontal position. When the load is to be dumped, the chains opposite the discharge side of the car are released.
The structure thus far described is old.
The lower portion of the door has heretofore been controlled by a bar which did not permit the opening of the door adistance sufficient for the ready discharge of loads. By means of my bar 8 I effect a further outward movement of the lower portion of the door when the car-body is tilted, and said bar also serves to firmly lock the door when the carbody is in the horizontal position.
A horizontal reinforcing-plate 2O extends across the middle portion of the outer face of each end wall approximately in line with the outer ends of the bars 8. A guide-plate 21 is immovably secured to the outer face of the brace-plate 14 and extends a short distance beyond each edge of said brace-plate. The upper edge of said guide-plate is flared outward away from said brace-plate. The inner end of each bar 8 extends between the reinforcing-plate 2O and the adjacent end of the adjacent guide-plate 21. To each inner end of each bar 8 is hinged one end of a link 22 by a horizontal bolt 22, and the opposite end of each such link is hinged on a horizontal stud or bolt 28, extending outward from the plate 2O at a point between and-a little above the two hinges of the adjacent bar 8. To impart to said bolt or stud 28 greater stability, a bracket-plate 24 is applied by i ts lower edge to the reinforcing-plate 2O and extended thence outward and upward and around the outer end of said bolt. To clear said bolt, the inner half of said bar 8 is curved upward, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The guide-plate 21 and the reinforcing-plate 2O are separated sufciently by the intervening brace-plate 14 to make room for the overlapping ends of the bar 8 and the link 22 andthe bolt 22, by which said bar and link are joined to each other. The upper edge of said guide-plate is iiared outward in order that said bar 8 and said link may the more readily enter between said plates 20 and 21 when the car-door is being closed. ln the closed position, (indicated by solid lines in Fig. 1,) as already described, the outer hinge of the link 22 is above the two hingesof the bar 8. Hence any outward pressure exerted against the lower portion of the door is resisted by said link 22, for the strain imparted to said link through the bar 8 will be on a line below the bolt 23, and there will be no tendency to lift the outer end of said link. On the contrary, the tendency is to draw the outer end of said link downward. Thus the lower portion of the door is very securely locked so long as the car-body is in the horizontal position; but when that side of the car-body is lowered, as already described, the adjacent lifting member 15 relatively lifts the adjacent bar 7, whereby the adjacent door is lifted, and the outer end of the adjacent bar 8 is lifted until the line cutting the hinges of said bar is above the outer hinge of the link 22; or it might be said that that side of the carbody descends more rapidly-than the adjacent bar 8, whereby the bolt 23, to which the outer end of the adjacent link 22 is hinged, is carried downward below the line cutting the hinges of the bar 8. Thus the inner end of said link 22 may rise and permit the bar 8 to move bodily outward. Such outward movement may continue until the inner hinge of the bar 8 is between the outer hinge of said bar and the bolt 28 and in line with said outer hinge and said bolt; but in order to facilitate the closing of the door when the car-body is again brought into the horizontal position, it is preferable to limit the downward movement of the inner end of said bar 8, so that the hinge which joins said bar and said link will remain a little above a line cutting the outer hinge of the bar 8 and the bolt 28. whereby said link is free to turn upward and inward on the bolt 23. To thus limit the downward movement of the bar 8, any suitable stop may be applied to the car in such position as to engage said bar when it has descended to the desired limit. For this purpose the drawings show a stop-block 25 applied to the lifting member 15 in proper position to engage the lower portion of the bar 8 when the latter has descended as far as is desired, and the drawings show the relative arrangement and proportions of the parts, such as to also bring said stop-block into engagement with the lower edge of the bar 8 when the earbody is in the horizontal position and the inner end of said bar has descended far enough to bring a line cutting the two hinges of said bar below the axis of the bolt 23.
The lifting member 15 is preferably composed of two bars 15, extending along opposite sides of the stop-block 25, and the bars 7 and 8 and the link 17.
The bar 8 and the link 22 may be operated manually for the outward movement of the lower edgeof the door when the car-body is in the horizontal position.
