SEAT-CONNECTING APPLIANCE FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 781,565, dated January 31, 1905.

.To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, HINsDALE SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, and aresident of Springfield, in the county of Hainpden' the attaching devices, whereby the fastenings are concealed and whereby at the adjoining forwardly-extended portions of both seats a smooth and continuous edge for the forward 2 2, Fig. 1.

comprise angle-bars 9 9, having members thereof horizontal, and the upper edges of these girder-arches, constituted by the horizontal members of the angle-bars, serve as supports for the sidewise-arranged pair of individual seats C (J, saidseats (or seat-frames, as they may be more p'roperlyregarded) comprising seatbottom boards a (L and rounded sheet-metal backs I), having the opposite side extensions 6 and surrounding the base of the connected bottom and back are angle-bars e, suitably curved to conform to the plan contour of each seat, while at the upper edges of the seat-back and side extensions a continuous suitably-curved angle-bar c is provided, the same being fastened by riveting, as indicated at 8, and having one angular member of this reinforcing-bar horizontal.
As indicated in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, the upper marginal reinforcing angle-bar for each of the seat-backs and sides at the inner side of the seat is terminated, as indicated at 20, above and somewhat to the rear of the forward cornerof the upright seat-side 6 and as represented in Fig. 1, the fiat and horizontal members of the angle-bars C C merge together somewhat above and to the rear of their point of termination 20, so that these ad joined portions constitute parts of a continuous armrest for the seats. The arm-rest and further continuation of the merged-together portions of the angle-bars c 0 for a flush-front formation and connection is constituted by the peculiarly-shaped metallic piece or casting G,-
which has a width equal to the combined width of both angle-bars c 0 and acurvature corresponding to the front edge contourof both forward extensions 6 of the two seat-backs,and

The thickness of the lugs 12 is the same as the slight distance between the seat-back extenions 72 and bolts 19 are passed transversely and horizontally through the seat portions 6 b and the intermediate perforated lugs 12 12 of the connection-piece G.
The cross member 7 at the lower front is let into the front edge of both seat-boards, the
angular and horizontally-extending lugs 17 17 underlying the seat-boards and resting on the horizontal member ofthe top angle-bar 9 of the front girder-arch B, and connection is here made by bolts 14 vertically applied, the same extending through perforations 14 in the lugs 17 and through the horizontal member of the angle-bar 9, fastening-nuts being applied next under and in binding relation against the angle-bar.
The arrangement and combination of parts described not only impart an attractive and sightly appearance at adjoined portions of the two seats, and one which when finished is flush and continuous, but provide an eflective means of fastening the adjoined front portions of the two seats together and onto the body in such a way that the fastenings are entirely concealed from view.
Further fastening means for holding the seats C C firmly on the body and against displacement consist, in part, of the bolts j which screw down through. the seat-bottoms and into the rearward girder-arch and in part of the devicesrepresented at f and g in Figs. 1, 2, and 6, the part f being a lug riveted on an elevated side portion A which may be considered a part of the vehicle-body, said lug having a bolt extension and the part g being a nut, which screws onto the bolt and against a perforated reinforcing-block 7a, which is brazed or otherwise securely fastened on the inner side of the sheet-metal back at a location corresponding to the outer side of the vehicle-body. The said lug and bolt f being horizontal, the seat may be brought to place as it is slid rearwardly to position of support on the front and rear girders B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
arranged side by side, of a rigid metallic part overlying the edges of said seat-back continuations, and having projections extending from its inner side between said continuations, and bolts passed through the latter and through said projections and provided with conliningnuts therefor.
3. The combination with a vehicle-body and a pair of seats having seat-bottoms and rounded backs with forward upright continuations arranged side by side, of a rigid'metallic part overlying the forward edges of said continuations, having projections extending from its inner side between said continuations, and having at its lower end oppositely-projecting members for engaging the seat-bottom fronts, and fastenings transversely applied through the seat-back continuations, and through the projections intermediate thereof.
4. The combination with a vehicle-bod y and a pair of seats havingseat-bottoms and rounded backs with forward upright continuations arranged side by side, of a rigid metallic part overlying the forward edges of the adjacent continuations of the two seats, and having connection therewith at the inner side of said part, and said part having at its lower end an inwardly-extending projection to overlie a horizontal seat-supporting part of the body, and by means of which to fasten it to such seat-supporting part.
5. The combination with a vehicle-bod y and a pair of individual seats comprising seat-bottoms and rounded backs with forward upright continuations arranged side by side and slightly separated, of a rigid metallic part overlying the forward edges of the adjacent continuations of the two seats, and having connection therewith inside of said part, and said metallic part having at its lower end oppositelyprojeeting members for engaging the seatbottom fronts,and an inward projection or projections to extend under the seat, and by means of which to fasten it to the seat-supporting part of the vehicle-body.
6. The combination with avehicle-body and a pair of seats having seat-bottoms and rounded backs with forward upright continuations arranged side by side and having at the upper edges of the backs the angle-bars secured thereto, and which as to those continuations of the back which are adjacent each other, are terminated above and to the rear of the front of the seat-bottom, a rigid metallic part overlying the forward edge portions of the adjacent continuations being facewise continuous with the top faces of the merged-together angle-bars of the two seats and having fastenings internally thereof with the seat sides or continuations.
7. The combination with a vehicle-body having a transverse member B which at its top comprises an angle-bar with the upper member thereof horizontal, and the pair of separately-constructed seats having seat-botat the forward sides of the seats screw-engag toms and rounded backs with forward upright continuations arranged side by side and'resting on said transverse member, of 'arigid me tallic part overlying theedges of "said seatback continuations having fastening at its inner side connecting it to said adjacent seat parts and having at its bottom an inwardlyextended member resting on the horizontal member of said part B and having verticallyapplied fastenings through it and said member;

The combination with a vehicle-body and the pair off-individual seats having rounded backs and side continuations substantially as described, and said backs having at the upper edges the angle-bars 0 o merged together and terminated as shown,"of a rigid metallic part overlying the forward edge portions of the ing at opposite'sides thereof the parts f comprising lug members secured to the body and horizontal .bol't extensions, of the pair of seats C C having backs provided with perforations therein located to match in line with said bolt extensions, and thefasteningnuts 9 applied ing the bolts. g
10. The combination with a vehicle-body having at opposite sides thereof the parts f comprising lug members secured to the body and horizontal bolt extensions thereof, of the pair of seats C 0 having backs provided with perforations and the reinforcing perforated blocks it in line with said bolt extensions, and the nut g screw-engaging said bolts against said blocks at the forward side of the seatbacks.

The combination witha vehicle-body having opposite lugs ff and the pair of seats C 0 having backs, supported on the body and arranged to adjoin the side pieces, said lugs and seat-backs being constructed and provided, relatively, the one with horizontallongitudinally-ranging bolts or studs and the other with perforations located in line with.
