WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of .-Letters Patent No. I781,515, dated January 31, 1905.
` AApplicationfindoaom11904. serrano. 2911213.
To all whorrb if; r11/fry concer-'70,: l A Be it known that'I, LEROY GRIFFIN, acitiin the county of Decatur and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches of the quick-actionclass, and has for its object to improve the construction and increase the efliciency-of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.v
lIn the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, andin which corresponding parts are denoted by like `designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assem.
blage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the drawings thus employed, Figurel is a side elevation with one of the movable jaw members detached, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the detached jaw member. Fig. 3'is a transverse section of Fig. 1 with both of the movable jaw-sections in position. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the upper portion of the improved wrench. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the, adjustable notched bar. Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view of the clamp-block by which the lower end of the lnotched bar is-secured.
The improved implement comprises a stock 10, having a stationary jaw 11 at one end and with the other end extended into a handle 12, the jaw 11 being preferably extended laterally upon both sides of the stock, one side for engaging pipes or rods and the other side for nuts or other similar objects. .A guideway 13 is formed upon the stock adjacent to the jaw member 11, and another guideway, 14, at the juncture of the handle and stock, the latter guideway vbeing preferably formed one half in the body of the stocl; and the other half in the inner `face of a detachable plate 15. Thevlower end of the plate 15 is inclined, as at 16, and provided with a rib V17 on the inclinded portionthereof for engagement with .a correspondingly-inclined recess in the stock,
so that one screw, as at 18, will be suliicient .to hold the plate in position.
Movably disposed upon one face of the stock `10 is a bar 19, slidably engaging the guideway 13 by one end and with a threaded stud 20 extending from the other end and slid` ably engaging the guideway 14. A nut 21, preferably provided with a milled exterior, operates upon .the'stud 2O and rotates in a recess 22 in the stock 10. The bar 19 is provided at one end with a recess 23 for engaging a rib/ 24 within the guideway 13 and is likewise provided with spaced notches or ratchet-teeth 25 on its outer face.
The movable jaw isformed in two sections 26 27, said sections being precisely alike, except that they are rights and lefts. The sections 26 27 are provided with internal recesses 28 29 for receiving the stock 10 and its associated bar member 19 and are firmly united for slidable movement on the stock` 10 by transverse bolts or rivets 30 and a clamp-plate angles to the recesses 33 34 to receive a bolt 35, said bolt having one end thereof inclined and its opposite end engaging an aperture in the plate 31, by which means it is guided for longitudinal movement. The bolt is provided with a coiled spring 36, by means of which the inclined'end is held in yieldable engagement with the teeth 25 of the bar 19. A triplever 37 is pivoted in the recesses 33 34. One end of the trip-lever 3-7 passes throughfan aperture in the bolt 35, and the opposite end thereof is pivoted to a pin 38, which engages an aperture in the plate 31 and is providedl with a terminal button 39. By this arrange- TOO ment it will be obvious that the movable jaw member will be iirmly held from movement in one direction, but free to be moved in the opposite direction b y reason of the inclined form of the teeth 25 and inner end of the bolt 35 and readily released for adjustment in the opposite direction by slight pressure of the thumb of the operator upon the button 39.
The jaw members 26 27 overhang the plate 31, so that the protruding stem 38 and its button 39 are protected while the wrench is being used.
1f a closer adjustment is required than can be secured by the spaces between the teeth or notches 25, a few turns of the nut 2l will adjust the bar 19 longitudinally ot' the stock carrying the jaw members therewith, as will be obvious.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed isl. In a wrench, a stock provided at one end with a stationary jaw and havingits opposite end extended into a handle, said stock being provided on one side thereof' with spaced longitudinal guideways and having a lateral recess formed in the stoel; in alinement with said guideways, a notched bar one end of which engages one of said guideways the opposite end thereot` being provided with a threaded stud for engagement with the second guideway, a nut disposed in the lateral recess and engaging the threaded stud, a movable jaw, a spring-controlled pawl carried by said movable jaw and yieldably engaging' said notched bar, and means for releasing said pawl.
2. In a wrench, a stock provided at one end with a stationary jaw and having its opposite v end extended into a handle, said stock being provided on one side thereof with spaced longitudinal guideways and having a lateral recess formed in the stock in alinement with said guideways, a notched bar one end of which engages one of said guidewaysthe opposite end thereof being provided with a threaded stud for engagement with the second guideway, a nut disposed in the lateral recess and engaging the threaded stud, a movable iaw embracing the stock and notched bar and formed of a plurality of sections detachably secured together, a spring-controlled pawl carried by said movable jaw and adapted to engage the notches in said bar, and meansfer releasing the pawl.
3. In a wrench, a stock provided at one end with astationary jaw and having its opposite end extended into a handle, said stock being provided at one side thereo't with spaced longitudinal guideways and having a lateral recess formed in the stoel( in alinement with said guideways, a notched bar one end ot which engages one of said guideways the opposite end thereof being provided w ith a threaded stud ler engagement with the second `guidewav, a nut disposed in the lateral recess and eng ging the threaded stud, a movable liaw embracing the stock and notched bar and termed in two seetions detachably secured together, said jawsect-ions having terminal recesses termed in their contiguous faces, a plate provided with spaced apertures extending across said re cesses and connected to both jawsectiens, a spring-controlled pawl carried by said iawsections and passing through one olt the apertures in said plate tor engagement with the notched bar, a trip-lever pivoted in said recesses and engaging an aperture in the springpawl, and a trip-pin passing through the second aperture in the plate and pivoted lo the trip-lever.
ln testimony that ,l claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto ai'lixed my sigmlture in the presence ot' two witnesses.
