Letters Patent No. 78,142, dated M'ay 19, 1868.
APPARATUS -FR BUNDLING GIGARS.
@its .Stimuli reirme in ia these Enters ntr'ut mit mating glitt ef tigt same.
y TO ALL WHOM IT LIAYCONCERN: l i
l Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Snecma, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania,`
'have invented certain Apparatus for'Facilitating the Bundling ot' Cigars; .and I do .hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. j,
My invention consists of apparatus, fully described hereafter; which can be readily adjusted for facilitat ing the packingtogether of cigars in bundles of different sizes, and containing dierent quantities of cigars.4
In order to en'able others to make and use my invention, Iw'ill uowproeeed to describe its construction and. operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms apart of this speciiicatiomand in whichv Figure 1 is a front v'iew of my improved apparatus for facilitating the bundling of cigars. Figure 2, a transverse sectional view of the same, on the line 1 2, fig. 1. l Figure 3, a sectional view, on the line 3 4, iig. 2. t Figure 4, a section, on the lline 5 6, tig. 2. Similar letters refer to 'similar parts'throughout the several views, K The base, A, of the apparatus rests upon feet, a, and is provided with un adjustable'rback; B, arrangednt right angles to the base, and secured to the same in any desired position by bolts and thumb-nuts, c.
vA- frame, C, cons`istng, in the present instance, o'f two vertical strips, c and of thin metal, 'connected together at the bottom by a.. cross-piece, f, is permanently lscciured'to the base, A, und asimilar frame, C', i A
arranged to slide longitudinallyupon the base, and towards or from the frame C, being secured in the position to which it is adjusted 'by a bolt and thumb-nut, g, passing through a longitudinal slotyjt, of.: the base.' (See figs. 2 and 3.)
In each of theI strips, e ande', ofthe framesv Gand Q are a number of holes, t', at equal distances apart, and of the shape best observed in figs. 2 and 4; and directly beneath these strips, and secured to andextending longitudinally ac ross the base, A, are plates F and Ff, beneath which are grooves, j, in the base, and in each of the said plates are holes, i', atd equal distances apart, and corresponding in size and shape with the holes i of the Astrips e and e j Heretotore it has been customary, in packing cigars into bundles, toV use Va. block of xv'ood, in which are bored circular holes, in close proximity to each other, and corresponding, as regards .number and arrangement, to the cigars' of thefdesired-bundle. The ends of thc cigars are inserted into the holes in this block, and are bound together by a\ribbon, and are the removed. 1
The objections to this plan are as follows: In the' first place, itV requiresconsiderable time to insert the cigars into the several holes in theblok; second, the ends of the cigars and .the wrappers are apt to become crackedor broken during the operation, and tol become further broken when, after removing them from the block, the cigars have to be moved endways, so as to make a uniform bundle; third, it is almost impossible to lbind the cigars ltightly unless they are uniform in shape, and of the exact size ipteuded forthe blocktand,
fourth, as cigars ar'e tied in bundles of twenty, twenty-five, fifty, and a hundred, and vary greatly in thickness, a separate block must beprovided for diferent bundles, and for cigars ot' di'erent sizes. i I
A stand or box, open at the top and at one side, has also been used; but this arrangement isopen tomany' of the above objections, whichI propose to obviate by the use of my improved apparatus, the mode of operating -which I will now proceed .to describe.
Let it be supposed `that iu the present instance the cigars are to be packed in bundles of fifty. The works man rst so adjusts andv secures the back, B, of the apparatus, that, when a cigar is laid upon the bese, A, its end resting against the back, thc thickest part of the cigar will be between the strips e and e',*of thefrar'nes U and C', as shown in iig. 2.
In'a bundle of fifty cigars,l arranged as shownby the red lines, ,.{ig. .1, there are nine' cigars extending across the widest portion of the bundle, and, before adjusting the movable frame, C', Vthis number of cigars is drawing dn. this presteert laid upon the base, A, as shown in fig. t5. 'The frame, C', being then moved towards the stationary frame (1',
.and secured vto the base by'its thumb-nut, g, when it isbrought` to such a. position as to allow no morethan the nine ogers to lie upon thebse between'it and frztm e,p0`. l Y Y After securing the djustable frame, 'three of the cigui's arefemove', and the -remaining six (the nninber ocoupying' the bottom row in iig. 1) are inovetl to'a position mdivab'etwenthe opposite frames, C and 01, vas.
shown in fig. 4. l I
The height from the buse, J A., of 'the widest ro'wof ,the bundle, in iig. 1 having been determined, :niet rod, G, is inserted at about that' height into one-ofthe holes, z' ,fof erich of the strips of the freine G, the 'ends of'tlio rods being also' inserted into those'holes, y1i", of theplutes F and 1""l which sire nearest to the cigar, z, ii`\ iig. 4. VTwo rods, G', are also inserted througll'tlie holes, i and i', .of the adjustable frame :1nd "plates F und F', :it nn ongle corresponding t-o ,thetof therodsGL I The apparatus buying been thus properly adjusted, ai ribbon, y, shonm'iinbluo linesfgs. 1 and 4, is laid,
upon the bese, A, between thestripsennd e of eneb of the'opposite frnmes, the. cigars being then placed in rows, as shown4 in fig. 1,'an'd being so guided by the rods G and G und frames C and C', that no more or less ythan the propernumber, can be' placed n.the.bun 1le. y l Y i Y. After the bundle'lins been er1-ringed, es' shown in g.1,`it is bound togethettby the ribbon end .reinoveii prepnretory to the formation-'of o seeond bundle. t f l' i l y l t It will'be seen, Wtbout'furiher description, that. the aboveivapp'ariitus'con be readily adjusted for facilitaring the packing together, of cigars'of. different sizes, and lin .bundles containing diierentjumbcrs. y
I claim as my in-vention, und desire to secure by Letters 'Patent- The base,- A, back B, permanentframe 0,'.andodjustable frame C', in combination with the ndjustable roda G and G', or their equivalents, the whole being constructed :ind arranged substantially ns`and foxf the purpose herein set forth,A y v s v v i i v In testimony-whereof, I have signed my nmo'to tms specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
