WOVEN-FABRIC CARTRIDGE-BELT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,853, dated April 18, 1905.

Be it known that l, ANsoN MILLS, of the United States Army, retired, a resident of W'ashing'ton city, in the District of Columbia, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Woven-Fabric Cartridge-Belts, of which the following' is a specification.A

My invention is directed to what are known as seamless woven -fabric cartridge-belts having the cartridge receiving' pockets or thimbles woven in one with the body of the belt, and it relates more particularly to what is known as the end fasteners.

The invention will be readily understood by reference tothe accompanying drawings, in which--e Figure 1 is a perspective view of the belt. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of a portion of the belt designed to show the spacing apart of the pockets and the location of the fastenersleeves opposite these intervals between the pockets but on the inner face of the belt.

A is the body of the belt, made of multi-ply selvag'ed woven fabric and provided on its outer face with pockets a for holding clips of cartridges, which pockets are preferablyv formed as described in Orndorffs Patent No. 666,687, of January 29, 1901. lt will be understood that in lieu of pockets for holding cartridge-clips the belt may have thimbles for individual cartridges, as in the well-known service-belt.

The belt shown in the drawings in its g'eneral make-up is similar to that illustrated in my VPatent No. 756,177, of March 29, 1901, having' the narrow end fasteners of that patent. The improvement I have made, which, I may say, is applicable not only to the particular belt in question but to any belt having' hook end fasteners the prongs of which point toward each other in a direction crosswise of the belt, resides in the device which receives and holds the hooks l of the end fasteners, these hooks being', as usual, on the end of a bar l', housed in a clip f, attached to the end of the belt. The device consists of a fabric sleeve or tube m, which is located upon the inner face of the body of the belt and is woven integ'ral therewith in a manner similar to that in which a cartridge-thimble is woven on the exterior face of the belt. This fabric sleeve ym, which extends crosswise of the belt, is of such length that it will lie easily between the big'hts of the hooks Z when the latter are inserted into the sleeve from opposite ends thereof, as indicated for the left-hand end of the belt in Fig. 1, and is of a diameter to comfortably house the hooks which it receives. There area number of these sleeves 'm located at intervals apart on each end of thebelt. I locate them upon the inner face of thc belt and opposite the intervals between the pockets on the outer face of the belt, as shown in Fig'. 2. The sleeve m is as durable as the belt itself. It is soft and not apt to make its presence felt by the wearer. It houses the fastener-hooks thoroughly and keeps them from contact with the person, while at the same time they are confined wholly to the inner face of the belt and do not extend over the edg'es of or protrude through the belt to the outside,as in other forms of fasteners, particle larly where eyelets are employed, as in my Patent No. 756,177, ofh/IarchQQ, 1904:. Moreover, the sleeve is inexpensive in itself and requires no separate operation to apply it, inasmuch as it is woven in one with the body of the belt and during the operation of weaving the latter.

Having described my improvement, what I claim herein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. In awoven-fabrie cartridgebelt,a doublehook end fastener l on the end of the belt, and a fabric sleeve woven in one with the body of the belt and located on the inner face, and crosswise, of the belt, to receive the said hooks, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

2.
