Description

No. 787,041. PATENTED APR. 11, 1905 B. H. HORN. "a LANTERN PINION.
APPLICATION FILED 001'. 6. 190 i.
UNITED STATES Patented April 11, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
WVATERBURY CLOCK PORATION.
CO., OF YVATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A COR- LANTERN-PINION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,041, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed October 6, 1904.. Serial No. 227,425.
To a whom, (It nan/y concern:
Be it known that 1, ERNEST H. HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at aterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lantern-Pinions; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which saiddrawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, an end View of a pinion constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view on a larger scale than Figs. 1 and 2, which, it will be understood, are more than full size.
This invention relates to an improvement in lantern-pinions for use in either clock or watch movements, but particularly for small pinions, and is an improvement on the invention set forth in Patent N 0. 444,684, granted January 13, 1891. The invention set forth in this patent comprised a staff with two collets thereon, one of which was constructed with a series of perforations and the other with a series of corresponding seats, with leaves extending through perforations of the one collet into the corresponding seats in the other collet, the leaves being held in place by a cap secured over the open ends of the perforations in the one collet. For economy of space the collet with the seats was formed with a shoulder to receive the wheel of the pinion.
The object of this invention is to avoid the necessity of the cap and to utilize a movementwheel as a means for holding the leaves in position; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
As shown in the drawings, I employ a staff 2, on which two collets are fixed. The collet 3 for convenience I Will specify as the outer collet and the collet 4 as the inner collet. Extending through the inner collet 4 are a series of perforations 5, and in the collet 3 are a series of corresponding seats 6, the perforations and seats being formed by drilling in the usual manner, as improved machinery now permits these collets to be drilled from the direction of the longer end of the staff. Passing through the perforations 5 and entering into the seats 6 are a series of leaves 7, formed, as usual, from short pieces of wire. After the leaves are inserted a movement wheel 8, which has a solid central portion or hub 9, is placed over the staff and crowded against the inner face of the collet 4, the diameter of the central portion being sufficiently large to cover the perforations in the collet, so as to hold the leaves in place. This wheel may be secured to the staff in any of the wellknown manners, and by employing a movement-wheel as a means for securing the leaves in position the use of a cap for that purpose is avoided and the inner collet may be made comparatively thin, as it is unnecessary to provide a shoulder thereon for the wheel, it being only necessary that they should be heavy enough to hold the leaves against lateral or endwise displacement.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lantern-pinion, the combination with a staff, of an inner and an outer collet mounted thereon, the inner collet constructed with a circular series of perforations, and the outer collet with a series of corresponding seats, leaves extending through said perforations and into said seats, and a movement-wheel having a central portion closely fitting said staff and located adjacent to the inner collet so as to close the perforations therein whereby said leaves are held in place.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST H. HORN.
