Be it known thatI, JOHN DEERINGREED, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk. and State of Massachusetts, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of whichk the following is a specification. L
My invention is an improvement upon the invention described by me inmy application for a patent filed in the Patent Office October 21, 1902, serially numbered 128,204; and its object is to provide means whereby the locking key or fastener may be readily secured in place and also readily removed when itis desired to do so which in certain cases may be more effective than those described in my `former invention. I have found that in practice the locking-piece described in my former invention may from rust or other cause become so'iirmly iixed in place that it is diiiicult to remove it and also that in some situations there is an objection to placing the locking-key radially of the nut. To overcome these difficulties, I now locate my locking-piece adjacent to and at one side of the center of the nut and prolong the guidinggroove in the washer, into which the fastener is placed, so as to extend through the washer to its opposite side. This prolongation, or continuation of the groove is to be preferably round and of a somewhat less diameter than the part into which the fastening-key lits, which part is to be of the length of the key, so that when driven in it will exactly fittherein. When it is desired to remove the locking-key, a rod, pin, or straight piece of metal of suitable size is to be placed in the continuation of the guiding-groove on the side of the I washer opposite to that in which the lockingkey was inserted, and by means of it the fastener can readily be driven or forced out.
In some cases it may not be necessary to remove the key by the means just described, as means substantially such as are shown in my former application may be used. In such case it will not be necessary to prolong the groove entirely through the plate. 7

The end of this rod may be bent down so as to hold it securely. When the key is to be removed, this end is to be bent up or the rod cut or broken away.

In using the device the washer or plate a is placed in position. The nut is then screwed down.' The key e is then driven along the groove d inwardly, the inclined cutting edge of the key passing under the nut and cutting a notch which forms a seat for the lockingkey. The nut is now held from rotation by the locking-key and is securely held in its ad- If the nut should become farther up on, the bolt' and the key again driven in, cutting a new groove in the nut, and the nut will be securely held in its new position as before. When itis desired tounlock the nut, the rod or pin j' is to be removed,
as above explained, and the key pushed or driven out by means of a steel rod or other suitable device pushed against the key through the outer end of the groove d.
In place of removing the pin f that portion of it' whichextends across the rear end of the key e may be sheared olf by the rear end of the key itself by delivering a blow upon the forward end of the key through the aperture CZ@ The plate or washer a is usually provided with means for preventing it from turning with respect to the adjacent part on which it rests, such as pins g projecting from its under surface and adapted to enter said adjacent part.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A nut-lock comprising a plate or Washer adapted to be held in xed position beneath a nut and having a groove formed therein adjacent to and at one side of the center of the nut, said groove being formed to provide a stop near one end, a locking-key of less length than said groove and adapted to slide therein, said key having a cutting edge extending above the surface of the plate, and means carried by said plate for preventing rearward movement of said key, substantially as described.
- 2. A nut-lock comprising a plate or washer adapted to be held in fixed position beneath a nut and having a groove formed therein adjacent to and at one side of the center of the nut, a locking-key adapted to slide in said groove and having a cutting edge extending above the surface of the plate, and a securing-pin adapted to enter said plate and extend across the rear end of said key when in operative position, substantially as described.
3. A nut-lock comprising a plate or washer adapted to be held in ixed position beneath a nut and having a groove formed therein adjacent to and at one side of the center of the nut, said groove extending through opposite edges of the plate and being reduced in diameter near one end to form a stop, a locking-key adapted to slide in the larger portion of said groove and having a cutting edge extending above the surface of the plate, and a securingpin carried by said plate and extending across the rear end of said locking-key when in operative position, substantially as described.
