Be it known that I', CHARLES FREDERICK ALLINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fort Dodge, in the county of Webster and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Illuminating Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

rlhe object of the invention is to provide a new and improved illuminating device for use in showwindows and other places and arranged to attract the attention of passers-by and other persons.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment or' the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the saine on the line 3 3 ol Fig. 2.

In a suitably-constructed base A is secured a post B, on which is mounted to turn a tubular support C, carrying' at its lower end a grooved pulley D, connected by belt with other machinery for imparting a turning motion to the upright hollow support C. The latter is provided at its upper end with ahead E, in which are mounted to turn the spindles F, F', F2, and F3 of hollow arms F2 F5, F, and F7, respectively, the spindles F F2 and F Fi being arranged diametrically in the head E, as plainly indicated in Fig'. 3, the spindles F F2 standing at right angles to the spindles F and F3. On the outer ends of the arms F1, F5, F, and F7 are secured electric lamps G of any approved construction, connected with a suitable source of electric energy, so that when the lamps are lighted and the device is set in motion by rotating the support C then a swinging motion is given to the several arms F", Fi", F, and F7, carrying the lamps G, to produce a very attractive effect.

FIn order to rotate the arms F4, F5, Fl", and F' `from the revolving support C, the following device is provided On the spindle F for the arm F'i is secured a bevel gear-wheel H, in mesh with a bevel gearwheel II, fastened on the upper end of the fixed post B, and hence when the support C is rotated the spindle F is carried around so that the bevel gear-wheel H turns by being in mesh with the stationary gear-wheel H to rotate the spindle Fand the arm FL thereon. On the inner end of the spindle F is secured a bevel gear-wheel H2, in mesh on one side with a bevel gear-wheel H3, fastened on the inner end of the spindle F', and the said bevel gear-wheel I-I3 is in mesh with a bevel gear-wheel H4, fastened on the spindle The bevel gear-wheel H" is in mesh with a bevel gear-wheel on the spindle F", and this bevel gear-wheel H is also in mesh with the bevel gear-ndieel H2 on the side opposite the one in mesh with the bevel gearwheel H3. `When the spindle F is rotated as described, then the other spindles, F', F2, and F3, are rotated in unison with the spindle F, but in such a manner that the arms FL and Fl turn in opposite directions relative to each other, and a similar movement is given tothe arms F and F7 to rotate the latter in opposite directions relative one to the other. At the same time, however-,the several arms revolve with the support C, so that each lamp Cr approximately describes a ligure similar to that of the numeral 8 during each complete revolution of the support C.

rIhe lamps G have globes which are preferably of differently-colored glass, as indicated in Fig. l, to heighten the eifect produced by the revolving and swinging lamps Gr.

In order to supply the electricity to the {ilaments of the lamps Gr, a binding-post I is arranged within the base A, and this bindingpost is connected with a suitable source of electric energy and also by a wire J with a brush l in contact with a contar/bring` l', attacl'ied to the under side ot the pulley l), preferably niade ol an insulating material, suoli as hard rulihcr. 'lhe contacl'fring' l' is connected with an insulated wire L, extending up and in the hollow support C and in the head E thereof to connect with a binding-post N' on a hloel: N, arranged in the space oetween the 'tour hevel gear-wheels H2, H3, H, and ll'r., as plainly shown in Figs. E2 and 3. ln this block .N and in axial alinenient with the several spindles F, liv, F, and F3 are mounted to slide contact-pins O, pressed on by springs O/ to hold the outer ends ol" the contact-pins in engagement with the inner ends et conductors P, held insulated in the hollow spindles F, lf, F2, and F3, as plainly indicated in thc drawings. From the outeil ends oiI the conductors l) lead branch conductors P in opposite directions in the hollow aries E", F", El, and F7, respectively, to the lamps (l at the outer ends the said arins. The return-wire ot' the electric lamps G is grounded on the support C ot' the device.
