5 TYPE WRITING MACHINE.
. APPLIUATION FILED MAY 12,- 1903.

UNITED STATES Patented April 4, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 786,394, dated April 4, 1905.
Application fi1ed May 12,
[0 all w/tom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE R.YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ridgewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in type-writing machines and the like by means of which time and labor can be saved when operating the same.
. The object of the invention is to provide adjustable and movable supports to the frame of the machine for the arms of the operator, thereby resting the same while manipulating the keys and space-bar.
Figure I represents a fragmentary plan view of the invention attached to a type-writing machine. Fig. 2 shows a front view of Fig. 1, partly in section. Fig. 3 represents a section of Fig. 1 on the line 4 4;. Fig. 4 is a partial section of Fig. 1 on the line 0' m.
The frame of a type-Writing machine is shown at A,within which are the usual keys B. On each side of the frame A of the machine there is fastened by screws O a bracket O, that carries trunnions O for the barrel D. The bracket O is generally provided with a cap O, and inthe lower portion of the said bracket there is formed an annular opening 0'. A sleeve E extends from the barrel D, and on the top face thereof is the winged nut F, threaded for the bolt G, which latter passes through the opening O in the lower portion of the bracket O. A rod H is supported in the barrel D by a set-screw I. On the free end of the said rod is journaled the wheel J, that turns on the pivot K, supported in a bearing in the rod. Annular openings L are formed in the wheel J for the bolts M, by means of which the wheel can be clamped in various angular positions. Sleeves N on the wheel J are provided for the vertical spindle O, which latter can be clamped in different positions by the set-screw N. The spindle O' carries the dovetailed guide P, in which slides the cross-head Q and in which latter is formed a guide Q" for the projecting end of the plate R.
1903. Serial No. 156,812.
The arm-support S can be adjusted horizontally by placing the barrel D in various angular positions by securing the sleeve E in diiferent positions by means of the bolt G. The distance of the. support S from the machine can be varied by clamping the rod H in difi'erent positions in the barrel D by means of the screw 1, and the rod H can also be turned in the barrel D and then clamped by the same screw 1. The support S can be tipped in vertical planes by adjusting the wheel J in different positions, and it can be raised and lowered by clamping the rod O in different positions by the screw N. The supports S can move horizontally in directions at right angles and parallel to the rod H by means of the guides P and Q.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In a type-writing machine, the combina tion of a rod journaled thereto, an arm-support carried on the rod, and means to move the arm-support parallel to and at right angles to the said rod.
2. The combination in a type-writing machine,of a barrel journaled thereto, a rod adjustably clamped in the barrel, means to clamp the barrel in various operative positions, an adjustable bracket clamped to the free end of the rod, a sleeve on the said bracket, a spindle adjustably clamped in the sleeve, a guide carried on, the spindle, a cross-head arranged to slide in the guide, a second guide carried on the cross-head, a plate arranged to slide in the second guide, and an arm-support carried on the plate.
3. In a type-writing machine the combination of a bracket extending therefrom, a barrel journaled to the bracket, means to secure the barrel in different positions on the bracket, a rod clamped in the barrel, an arm-support carried by the rod, means to move he support parallel to and at right angles to tie rod.
I. In a type-writing machine the combination of a bracket, trunnions on the bracket, a barrel supported on the trunnions, a sleeve extending from the barrel, a bolt arranged to clamp the sleeve to the bracket through an opening in the bracket, a rod extending from I the{ barrel, and an arm-support carried on the 1 roc.
5. In a type-writing machine the combination of a rod journaled thereto, a wheel having annular openings. journaled to the rod,
bolts connecting the wheel and the rod through the said annular openings, sleeves on the wheel, a vertical spindle passing through the sleeves on the Wheel, a set-screw clamping the vertical spindle through one of the sleeves, and an arm-support carried by the vertical spindle.
6. In a type-writing machine the combination of brackets bolted thereto, a barrel journaled in each bracket, a rod adjustably secured in eachbarrel, means to hold the rod in different angular positions, an arm-support adjustably held at one end of the rod, and means to raise and lower said support.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 7th day of May, A. D. 1903.
