To all 11171/0721, it may concern:
Be it known that l, HUBERT LAWRENCE WHITE, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the characters of refe-rence marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide an inhaler which embodies a variety of features adapting the one instrument to a number of uses and, further, to increase the efciency of this class of instruments.
Figure 1 of the drawings shows in vertical section a partial perspective of the instrumentin its most complete form. Fig. 2 shows a simplified form of the invention in vertical section. Fig. 3 shows another modified form.
Referring to the reference-figures in a more particular description, 1 indicates the main tank r receptacle, which 'is provided with a closed cover 2 and a handle 3. Through suitable openings in the cover are inserted the small medicine-receptacles 4 and 5. These are of a test-tube form and provided with a flange -shoulder resting on the edge of a threaded collar at said openings. The receptacles are secured in position by the screwcaps 6 and 7. These caps carry a long tube and a short tube extending into the medicinechamber and passing through and projecting1 above the cap and marked 8 9 8 9a. the main tank there is provided a coil 10 of pipe, the ends 11 and 12 of which pass through and project above the cover 2. Two short tubes 13 and 14 pass through the cover 2 and project above the same. The projecting ends of each of the tubes mentioned are of the same size and suflicient to and adapted to receive the end of a hose slipped thereupon.
In use the receptacle 1 may be filled with water up to the line s s, although a somewhat larger or smaller quantity may be used, and heated over an alcohol-lamp or otherwise. Medical preparations may be placed in the medicine-receptacles 4 and 5 `up to the lines Withinl o o; and .fr in, respectively, more or less, and the tubes connected up with pieces of rubber hose, as follows: 12 with 8, Qn with 8, 11 with 13. A delivering-hose with a mouthpiece, if desired, is attached to the tube 9, and an airforcing mechanism may be attached by a piece of hose to the tube 14. l/Vhether the circulation is caused by air-forcing mechanism or suction at the mouthpiece, it is as follows, viz: through tube 14, over su rface of water in receptacle, where it may take up moisture, through coil 10, through or in contact with medical preparations in receptacles 5 and 4 successively, and thence to the discharge.
By various manipulations of the pieces of hose and their connections one or both of the medicine-receptacles may be eliminated from the plan of circulation. The heating-coil may be placed in the circulation before or after the medicine-receptacles or even between them. The humidity featurethat is to say, the circulation over the surface of the water in the main receptacle-may be eliminated or introduced at any stage of the circulation, and, in brief, the device is adapted to provide simply a heated dry air 0r a moisture-saturated or a medicated or doubly-medicated air and any number of various combination of these.
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 2 a tank or receptacle 2O is provided, having a closed cover 21 filled with water up to the line w w, more or less. A coil 22 of pipe arranged in a vertical plane is contained within the tank and has its ends 22 22b extending through the cover and projecting sufficiently to permit the ready adjustment of a hose. In the cover there is also provided a filling-opening 23 and a tube 24, similar to the tube of the coil, extending through the cover and projecting on the outer side sufficiently to permit the ready adjustment of a hose. ln this construction the end of the coil 22" may be connected with the tube 24 by a short piece of hose, with the ends slipped over each. The intake will then be through the filling-opening 23, and the mouthpiece and hose would be attached at 22. The medical preparation would be introduced at 22" or 22Ll into the coil 22 when the hose is detached. By detaching the hose from 24 or 22 the humidity feature is IOO eliminated and the preparations in the coil are simply heated by the water in the tank. By omitting' the medical preparation the coil can be employed simply to supply hot air.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the tank or receptacle 30 is supplied with the internal coil 3l, having' the ends 31 3lb projecting' through the cover. A sing'le medicine-receptacle 32 is employed, having the tubes 33 and 34, and th-ere are provided the tubes 35 36, passing through the cover ot the tank and projecting above the same. The tank may be lilled with water up to the line and the medicine-receptacle with medicine up to the line 0 o, more or less. rlhis construction is capable of several of the uses set forth as to the construction shown in Fig. l and need not here be enlarged upon.
Other modilied forms of the construction may be made without departing from the spirit ol my invention.

the closed tank having Openings in the top, each provided with pipe-couplings, a coil of pipe within said tank, the ends of which project through the cover and are provided with similar pipe-couplings to that on the tankopening, a closed medicine-receptacle depending' from the cover into the tank, having an opening' with a pipe-coupling similar to the others, a pipe having' an external pipe-coupling similar to the others extending into the medicine-receptacle and substantially to the bottom thereof, a delivery-pipe attachable at any of said pipe-couplings, and connectingtubes attachable at both ends to any ot' said pipe-couplii'igs, whereby the device is adapted to be used, substantially as` set forth.
