STOVE KNOB.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 14, 1904.

PATENT OF ICE.
ROBERT G. CORNFORTH, OF SEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE H. A. MATTHEWS MFG. CO., OF SEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT,
A CORPORATION.
STOVE-KNOB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,305, dated March 7, 1905.
Application filed November 14, 1904. Serial No. 232,612.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT G. CoRNFoR'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seymour,in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Knobs; andI do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of a stove-knob constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a top or plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical central section; Fig. 4, an enlarged sectional view on the line a I; of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a side view of a knob with the coiledwire grip removed; Fig. 6, a sectional view on the line 0 (Z of Fig, 5.
This invention relates to an improvement in knobs, and while particularly adapted for use as a stove-knob may be employed for any other purpose where a knob is used adjacent to a heated surface and where it is desirable that the grip or outer end of the knob should be as cool as possible.
For various purposes spirally-coiled wires have been employed to form a grip on knobs or other devices; and the object of this invention is to combine a coiled-wire grip with a knob in a simple and convenient manner, so as to permit of the production of the knobs at a very low cost for manufacture and the production of a knob in which the grip is not liable to become accidentally displaced; and the in vention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
The knob 2 may be of any approved construction.
uniting a shank 3 and a cap 4, the cap over- As herein shown it is formed by lapping the shank. In the periphery of the cap is an annular groove 5, provided at one or more points with ears 6 7 which are cut from the bottom of the groove 5 and turned radially outward. Extending around the knob and seated in the groove 5 isa spirally-coiled wire 8, the ends of which meet at a point between the ears 6 7 These ears are then turned down over the ends of the coil, so as to connect the ends of the coil and hold it in the groove. If necessary, corresponding ears may be formed at other points in the periphery of the knob to interlock with the coil; but at such intermediate points one ear may be sufficient.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting the invention to the exact form of knob shown, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A stove-knob having an annular groove, a spirally-coiled wire located in said groove, and ears turned outward from said groove and engaging with the coils of the wire, substantially as described.
2. A stove-knob formed with an annular groove and with integral ears extending outward therefrom, combined with a spirallycoiled wire located in said groove and held in position by said ears, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT G. CORNFORTH.
