Be itknown that l', DANIEL F. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain improvements in Gloves, of which the following' is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in gloves, and more particularly in that class of g'loves which are made from leather, fabric, or other suitable material cut and sewed inform; and the object of theinvention is to provide a g'love of this gei'leral character of a simple and improved nature in the manufacture of which a minlnum number of pieces are required, whereby economy is effected in the cutting and sewing of the glove and a novel andimproved arrangement and location of seams is afforded, giving' rise to increased strength and durability.

The invention consists in certain novel fea.- tures of the construction, combination, and

,arrangement of the several parts of the improved glove whereby certain important advantages are attained and the glove is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.

In the accompanying' drawings, which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the outline formation of the main or body portion of the improved glove. Fig. 2 is anelevation showing' certain features of the formation and location of the seam about the thumb portion of the improved glove as viewed from the palm with the thumb drawn down. Fig. 3 is a view of the back of the glove and also showing eertain features'of formation and locations of seams. Fig. 4 is a View showing in outline the smaller or auxiliary part of the improved glove.

As shown in the views, theimproved glove Ais formed from two parts or pieces, a main or body portion 1 and a smaller auxiliary linger portion 2, the outlines of these parts or pieces being illustrated in Figs. l and 4E, respectively. The main or body portion l comprises in integral form all of the fourchettes or finger members for the improved glove with the exception of the outer o1' back member for the third linger, which latter member is formed from the auxiliary portion 2, which in the course of manu'l'acture is joined to the body portion l in a well-l nown way, as will be hereinafter fully described.

The main or body portion l is designed to be centrally and transversely folded, as indicated by the dotted line at 3, so as to produce therefrom palm and back. portions or plies and (i, the line of fold (-ixtei'idiug ecute-.illy along the side of the fourth linger At, one member of which is thereby carried upon each of the said palm and back portions and plies 5 and (i of the glove.

Upon the palm portion or ply (i ofthe improved glove are integrally produced the inner or palm members or fourchettes 8, 1l, '13, and Q0, respectively, of each ol" the successive lingers and thumb of the glove, the members 8, ll, and 13 for the third, second, and first fingers being alongside of and projecting from the same edge of tho body portion as the fourth-linger member LL. Upon the back ply or portion 5 ol'the glove is produced the outer or bach member or fourchette 10 for the second linger, and at the base of said member i0 is produced a space or opening' 7, intervening between said member and the outer member or fourchette JPfor the fourth linger, said opening or space 7 being transversely extended, so as to a'll'ord an edge portion for the attachment of the inserted outer member for the third linger, which is produced from the auxiliary part or portion 2. 19 indicates the outer or bach member or fourchette for the thumb of the glove, which tio is also integrally produced upon the back ply or portion alongside of the member 10, and 12 indicates a transversely-e'xtended space or opening' produced between these last-mentioned members 10 and 19 in a way similar to the space or opening 7, above referred to, said space or opening' 12 being adapted for the insertion of the outer member or fourchette 14 for the first or index finger, which` as above stated, is integral upon the palm ply or portion 6 and is adapted to be folded' over upon the outer or back side of the g'love, as shown in Fig. 3.

By this arrangement it will be evident that upon the palm ply or portion 6 are produced the palm members or fourchettes for each of the several fingers and thumb of the g'love, while upon the outer or back ply vor portion 5 there are produced only the members 4a, 10, and 19 for the alternate fing'er and thumb portions of the gloveuthat is, of the fourth and second fingers and of the thumbthe intervening spaces 7 and 12 between these alternate finger and thumb members or fourchettes serving for the production thereon of lateral wings, as indicated at 10a, affording the necessary fullness for closing' the sides of the glove-fingers.

In joining the two parts or pieces 1 and 2 to produce the improved glove the several palm and back or outer members or fourchettes for the fourth, third, and second fingers are sewed in the ordinary way, the auxiliary part orrportion 2 being' stitched along the opening 7 to produce a seam extended across the knuckle of the third finger, as shown lat 9 in Fig. 3.

By the formation of the two members 13 and 14 for the first finger side by side and integrally connected upon the palm ply or portion 6 it is evident that the stitching of said finger along its outer side is avoided, and when the fourth, third, and second fingers have been closed in the ordinary way the outer member 14 for the first finger will be folded over outwardly and stitched at its free edge to the opposite edge of the inner or palm member 13, so as to close the inner side of the first linger.

16 and 17 indicate edges produced upon the members 14 and 10 at the opening' 12 and adapted to be stitched together, so as to effect a closure between the first and second fingers, and 15 indicates an inclined edge produced at the lower part of the outer member 14 of the first finger, and which is adapted to be stitched along' the edge of the opening' 12 between the thumb and first-finger members on the back ply of the glove. By this arrangement an inclined or oblique seam is produced, extended from the closure between the first and second fingers across the knuckle of the first finger to the side seam for the thumb portion, as shown at 18 in Figs. 2 and 3.

Vhen the four finger portions of the glove have been produced as above described, the outer member 19 for the thumb is lapped or folded over in substantial alinement with the first finger, as indicated in F ig'. 2, after 'which the inner or palm member 29 of the thumb portion is sewed thereto around its edges, as indicated at 22, the adjacent edges of the back and palm plies 5 and 6 being then stitched along the wrist of the glove, as indicated at 23.

By the construction of the glove as above described it is evident that a material economy is effected in the manufacture, and increased strength and durability of the glove is attained, owing to the improved arrangement of the seam across the knuckle of the first finger to the side seam of the thumb, whereby that portion, 21, of the glove between the first finger and thumb upon the palm side is left free from seams. It will also be obvious from the above description that the improved glove is capable of some modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts herein set forth in carrying' out my invention in practice.

Having' thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A glove comprisingapalm ply or portion having integ'ral fourchettes for the fingers and thumb, the fourchettes for the fingers being' side by sidel and that for the first finger comprising palm and outer members integrally connected along' one side and the thumb fourchette being' at the edge of said palm portion Vopposite to said first-fing'er fourchette, and a back ply or portion having integrally-connected outer fourchettes for the thumb and second finger separated by a space in which is received the outer member carried by the first-finger fourchette of the palm ply of the glove, said outer member for the first-finger portion being` stitched to the back ply by a seam extended across the knuckle of the first finger to the thumb portion of the glove.

2. Aglove comprising' a palm ply or portion having integrally-connected palm members for the thumb and second fing'er and also provided with integrally-connected palm and outer members for the first finger and a back ply or portion having' integ'rally-connected outer members for the thumb and second fing'er and provided with a space intervening between said thumb and second-finger members and in which is received the outer member for the first finger, said outer member for the first finger being stitched to the back ply or portion to produce a seam extended across the knuckle of the first linger to the thumb portion of the glove.

3. Aglove comprising' a body portion centrally folded to produce palm and back plies, the back ply having' integrally-connected TOO IOS
