PATENT QEEICE.
TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,738, dated January 10, 1905.
Application filed September 10, 1904. Serial No. 224,130.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT RooHMILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Selma, in the county of Dallas and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful irnprovements in trousers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of a pair of trousers, and relates more particularly to the formation of cuffs upon the bottom of the legs and also upon the waist.
A further object of the invention is to construct a pair of trousers with a cuv or belt retaining and covering means formed upon the upper edge thereof.
A still further object ofthe invention is to secure upon a pair of trousers of the desired length means for retaining and entirely covering a belt except the buckle thereof, said buckle being positioned flush with the covering and retaining means upon the trousers.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevated front View of a pair of trousers constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig.
' 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of the trousers, taken on line 2 2, Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l designates the body portion of a pair of trousers to which is secured the culf or belt securing and covering means 2. (lus 3 are also formed upon the lowest portion of the legs of the trousers.
In the construction of the present invention I do not turn over a portion of the waist of the trousers, butadd to the edge 'portion of the waist a cuff or belt securing means 2, which comprises in its construction a single piece of material which is folded at 4, thereby producing a folded strip 5, which is secured beneath the outside portion of the cu 2. The folded portion terminates near the upper portion 6 of the cuff 2, contiguous to the upper edge of the trousers 1. A stiffening-piece of material 7 is interposed between the outer and inner folded portion of the strip employed in the construction'of the cuf or belt securing and covering means 2 for the purpose of producing a comparatively stiii' effect to the cuff.
An ordinary facing-piece 7iL is secured to the trousers, upon the inner sides thereof, at 8. The fastening means employed in securing'the facing-strip 7u to the trousers is also used to secure the reinforced strip 2 to the trousers. The cuff or belt covering means 2 is also secured, preferably by stitching the same at different parts thereof, to the body of the trousers, as is indicated at 9, thereby positively preventing the belt from becoming displaced when positioned upon the trousers beneath the cuff. The cuff 2 does not meet upon the front of the trousers, but is separated so that the buckle 10 ofthe belt l1 will lie flush with the cuf 2 when the belt is positioned beneath the same. By this construction an artistic ei'ect is produced, as it eliminates the undesirable effect of exposing the entire belt to view when it is only desired that the buckle should be observed.
The stilfening means 7, positioned between theV parallel portions of the cuff, produce a reinforced covering for the belt, which is added to a pair of trousers of suitable length. By this construction it will be obvious that it is not necessary to turn over a portion of the upper edge of the trousers, thereby destroying the construction of the trousers, as it will be obvious that if a cuH were formed from the integral part of an ordinary pair of trousers the size of the trousers would be destroyed.
The cuffs 3 3, secured to the legs of the trousers, are preferably formed integrally with the legs, although, if it is desired, they may be secured to the legs as cuff 2 is secured to the waist.
A pair of trousers constructed inaccordance with the present invention is provided with cuffs formed upon the bottom of the legs and with a cuffl upon the waist or body portion thereof, producing in appearance an artistic effect'.
IOO
While I have described in the foregoing description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings the preferred construction of my invention, it will be apparent to one versed in the art to which this invention relates that certain alterations, modifications, and changes may be made, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations, modifications, and changes as shall fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the present invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A pair of trousers having a cu formed about the waistthereof and comprising a separate piece of material permanently secured to the trousers and having its outer edge folded under and against said piece, a reinforcingstrip interposed between the overlapping portions of the cuff, and equal in width to the folded portion of the cuff, the ends of the cuff being spaced apart, and means for fastening the outer edge of the cuff to the trousers.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination witha pair of trousers, of belt securing and covering means permanently positioned upon the waist thereof, comprising a single piece of material folded throughout its length, a reinforcing-strip interposed between the folded portion of said cuff, the ends of the cuff terminating near each other producing an opened portion, a belt provided with a buckle and positioned upon said trousers, said buckle adapted to lie flush with the cuff within the opened portion formed between its ends.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of trousers, of cuffs formed upon the bottom of its legs, a cuff formed near the upper edge of said trousers, comprisingaseparate piece of material perinanently secured to the inner side of said trousers, and having its outer edge folded under and against said piece, the folded portion of said piece terminating near the upper edge of the trousers', a reinforcing-strip of the same width of the folded portion of the piece of material interposed between the folded and outer portion of the cuff, the ends of said cuff terminating near each other, a belt provided with a buckle positioned beneath said cuff, said buckle positioned between the ends of the cuff Hush therewith, and fastening means connecting the outer edge of said cuff with the trousers.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
