PATENT OFFICE.
I ARTHUR MERTON PARKER, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SEWING-AWYL.
SPEGIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,066, dated December 270, 1904.
' Application filed December 9, 1903. Serial No. 184,503.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit knownthatLAR'rrrcR MERTONPARKER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Los An geles, in thecounty of Los An geles and State of California, have invented a new and Ima full description.
My invention is an improvement in the class of sewing-awls whose handles are provided with a recess or chamber to receive a threadwound spool from which the thread passes to the eye of the awl-point and is drawn off as required. 1 v I The invention consists of novel features and parts and combination of same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l'is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same'on the line 2 2 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of same on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4:, a View of the springlock f with end of spool-holder "a locked in hole by spring-snap k, which engages with the groove Z. The dotted lines show the lock f' open.
The improved sewing-awl is provided with a suitable handle A, carrying at its front end a chuck B for receiving and holding a needle U of any approved construction. Extending diagonally from the front end of the handle is arranged a chamber D, through which extends a spool-holder E in the form of a shaft secured to handle A inthe rear of the chamber D, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The front end of the spool-holder E is secured by a spring-lock F, adapted tobe opened, as indicated by the dotted lines, and allowing the removal of an empty spool Gfrom the spool I holder'or placing a filled spool on said holder In using the device the operator takes hold of the handle A in such a manner that the fingers extend across the slot I, thereby governing the unwinding and tension ofthe thread in' the operation of sewing,
By the arrangement described a nearly closed handle is provided, with no loose parts to fall out or be 'mislaid. By having the chamber d extending -diagonally from the front of the handle no plugs or lids are required for a bearing for the hand, and the spool can be secured .or withdrawn for refilling byclosing or opening the spring-lock, as
indicated in the drawings. By having the slot 2' diagonal through the handle it places it parallel with the diagonal chamber, which allows the easy passage of the thread from the spool to the needle. The needle 0 is provided with the usual eye for the passage of the thread, and the said needle is also preferably provided with the'usual longitudinally-extending recesses in the rear of each side of the eye for the easier passage of. the needle with the thread through thematerial to be sewed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. An awl, comprising a handle having a chamber extending diagonally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the handle, from the forward end to nearly the rear of the handle, a shaft or spool-holder in the chamber adapted to hold the spool with thethread thereon, oneend of the shaft or spool-holder extending through and fastened in the rear of the chamber and a spring-lock in the forward end of the chamber adapted to secure the forward end In testimony whereof I have signed my name to th1s speclficatlon 1n the presence of two sub- IO scribing \vltnesses.
ARTHUR MERTON PARKER.
