Be it known that I, FRANK X. KRABAm-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana; have invented new and useful Improvements in Newspamr-Files, o' which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to files for newspapers and the like; and it has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, amleonvonicnt file embodying such a construction that while a newspaper may be readily secured thereon and as readily removed theret'rorn, When desired there is no liability of the newspaper becoming casually disconnected.

With the foregoing in mind the invention will be fully understood from the following description and elaimswhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my novel file; Fig. 2, a top plan of the same; Fig. 3, a longitudinal central section with the retainingrod in elevation, and Fig. t an enlarged detail section of the forward end of the file.

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referrng to which- A is the bar of my improved file, which is preferahly, though not essentially, of wood and circular in cross-section. The said har has a soclzet (I, adjacent to one end and a groove I), which conmunicates with the socket, and it also has the latter end beveled, as indicated by c, and provided with a kerf or depression (Z, which eommunicates at one end with the groove b, as shown. W'hen the bar A is ot' Wood, I provide the end c thereot with a metallic or other suitable reinforeement, the purpose of which is to prevent undue wear of the wood when the head of the retainin'mod, presently described, is Sprung into and out ol? engagement with said head. This reintorcement in the present embodiment oi' my invention is a metallc staple a, embedded in the end c of the har and extending across the depression d. When however, thebar A is of metal tubing, as may sometimes he the case,

the metal reinforcement may oli course be dispensed with.

B is a resilicnt rod, preterably ot' metal, which normally rests in the groove Z of bar A and has tor its purpose to retain anewspaper thereon. This rod has an angular end f', seated in the socket a of bar A, and at its opposite and 'free end it is provided with a 'ornded head which by engaging the heveled end c ot' har A is enabled to hold the rod in groove I). The head (7 is preferably in the form of a ring, as shown this to better adapt the file for use on the newspaper-rack constituting the subject-matter of my contemporary application, filed March 24, 1903 Serial No. 1495304, of which this application is a division.

(3 is a handle having' a socket L, which receves one end of the bar A. The said handle is Secured on the bar through the medium of a ferrule 'ai and a diametrical pin j or other means, and it serves to hold the angular end f of the rod B in the so cket a of the bar, and thereby precludes casual disconnection of the rod from the har while permitting of the free end portion of the rod being sprunginto and out ot engagement with the bar;

In the practical use of my novel [ile it will be observed that when the rod B is placed in the hight or `told ol" a newspaper while the head is disengaged :from the beveled end a of bar A and said head g is Sprung into engagenent with said end e the newspaper will he held to the bar A without liability of casual disconnection or di s'arrangenent. XV hen, however, the head of rod B is Sprung out of engagement with the end c of bar A, the newspaper may be readily removed and a 'fresh paper put in its place. It will also he observed that by grasping the handle G of the l'ile a person is enabled to Conveniently hold a newspaper while reading the same.

It will be read ily appreciated tromthe foregoing that with all of its advantages my novel file is simple and inexpensive and embodies no delicate parts such as are likely to get out of order after a short period of use.

I have entered into a detailed description of the Construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and pre- 'erred embodiment of my nvention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, hoWever to be understood as confining myself to such specific Construction and relative arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.

Having described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

l. A newspaper-file comprising a bar having a beveled end, and a resilient rod connected at one end to the bar, and having a ronnded head arranged to be Sprung into and out of engagement With the beveled end of the bar.

2. A newspaper-file comprisng a bar, of Wood, having a beveled end, and a metallic reinforcement 'or the same, and a resilient rod connected at one end to the bar, and having a rounded head arranged to be Sprung into and out of engagement With the beveled end of the bar.

3. A newspaper-file comprising a bar having a beveled end, and a resilient rod connectl ed at one end to the bar, and having a ring arranged to be Sprung into and out of engagement With the beveled end of the bar;

4. A newspaper-file comprising a bar having a longitudinal groove, and a beveled end, and a resilient rod connected, at one end, to the bar, disposed in the groove thereof, and having a rounded head, at its opposite end, ar'anged to be Sprung into and out of engagement With the beveled end of the bar.

5. A newspaper-file comprsing a bar having a beveled end, a socket adjacent to its opposite end, and a longitudinal groove extending from the socket to the beveled encL a resilient rod arranged in the groove of the bar, and having an angular end portion seated in the socket of the bar, and a rounded head arranged to be Sprung into and out of engagement With the beveled end thereof, and a handle Secured on the bar, overthe angular end portion of the rocl.
