SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,509, dated November 8, 1904. Application filed January 15, 1904. Serial No. 139,131. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. DEoKERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Binders, of which the'following' is a specification.

My invention relates to loose-leaf binders. It consists of novel means for moving the sides of said binders toward and from each other.

It further consists of means for covering the working mechanism of said binders to protect the leaves inserted therein from oil and dirt.

It further consists of novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a binder embodying my invention in its contracted position with the cover-plates removed. Fig. 2 is a section through the line a: m, Fig. 1, with the cover-plates in position. Fig. 3 is a section through the line 3 y. Fig. 1, except that the cover-plates are shown and that the binder is in its expanded position. Fig. 4is a top plan view, on a reduced scale, showing a modification in the construction. Fig. 5 is a like view showing another modification.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, 1 1 designate the clamping-jaws of a binder, consisting of flat back portions 2 2 and curved side portions 9 U 4 designates a frame, (shown as a back,) and provided with upturned end flanges 5 and 6, on which are mounted flanged guides 7 and '8, supported away from the portions 5 and 6 by studs 9 and 10, (shown as screws.) These flanges 7 and 8 assist in preventing the relative longitudinal movement of the jaws 1 1' and in guiding their transverse movement. Running longitudinally of the frame or back 4 is a way or groove 11, adapted to receive and guide a rack 12. The rack 12 is provided with an upturned lug 13, having an internal thread adapted to run upon a screw-rod 14, which, as shown, is supported at one end in a block 15, located substantially midway of the frame 4, and at its other end in the flanged guide 7. The threaded rod 14 is provided at its free end with a squared or otherwise polygonal portion 16, adapted to engage in a removable key 17in the usual manner. Mounted transversely in the block is a rod 18, having right and leftthreaded portions 19 and 20. Secured midway of the rod 18 is a pinion21, adapted to engage with the rack 12. The threaded portions 19 and 20 run in nuts 22 and 23, secured, respectively, to the back portions 2 and 2 of the two clamping-jaws 1 1. Telescoping posts and sleeves 24 and 25 extend from the upper edges of the portions 3 and 3 of the jaws l 1 for engaging suitably-slotted leaves, sheets, or the like acting as supports therefor. Cover- plates 26 and 27 are secured at their edges to the portions 3 and 3 of the jaws 1 1, so as to overlap each other and move adjacent each other, as shown in Figs 2 and 3, and these together form an efficient means for preventing oil or dust which may gather on the moving parts of the device from coming in contact with the leaves or other papers engaged with the posts 24 and sleeves 25.

In Fig. 4 of the device 1 have showna guard 28 for this purpose substantially cruciform in shape and secured at its ends either to the flanges 7 and 8 or to the upturned portions 5 and 6 of the frame 4.

The operation ofmy device will be readily understood from aninspection of the drawings. It is evident that the turning of the screw '14 by means of the key 17 will cause the rack 12 to move longitudinally of the back or frame 4 and that by reason of the pinion 21 meshing with the rack the rod 18 will be rotated, whereby the clamping-jaws 1 1 will be moved toward or from each other and to a like extent;

Fig.- 5 of the drawings shows another modification, in which the screw-rod 14 moves a rack which engages with two pinions 29 and 30, each of which is guided in a block 31 and 32 and is securely fastened to a transverse threaded rod 33 and 34, which moves in nuts 35 and 36 on the jaws 2 2 of the binder. It

It is also evident that the jaws 1 1 and the back t when made of a substantially flat piece, as shown, may be covered with leather or the like to present an ornamental. appearance and to prevent injury to a desk or table upon which the device is used.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A binder comprising a pair of suitablysupported clamping-jaws each consisting of back and side portions, a threaded rod mounted transversely of each of said jaws and moving in nuts on the back portions and inclosed between the side portions, a pinion on said rod intermediate said jaws and a longitudinally-movable rack engaging with said pinion.

2. A binder compri. ng a pair of suitablysupported clamping-jaws each consisting of back and side portions, telescopic sheet-engaging means extending between said side portions, a rod mounted transversely of said jaws and having right and left threads running in a nut on the back portion of each of said jaws, said rod being inclosed by said side portions, a pinion on said rod intermediate said nuts and a longitudinally-movable rack engaging with said pinion.

3. A binder comprising a pair of suitablysupported clamping-jaws each consisting of back and side portions, telescopic sheet-engaging means extending between said side portions, a back on which said jaws are transversely movable, a threaded rod mounted longitudinally of said back between said jaws, a rack longitudinally movable by means of said threaded rod, a rod mounted transversely of said jaws and having right and left threaded portions engaging with a nut on the back portion of each of said jaws and inclosed by said side portions, and a pinion mounted on said rod and engaging in said rack, whereby the rotation of said longitudinally-disposed rod acts to move said jaws toward and from each other.

4:. A binder comprising a pair of suitablysupported clamping-jaws each consisting of back and side portions, a threaded rod mounted transversely of each of said jaws and engaging with the same and inclosed between the said side portions, a pinion on said. rod intermediate said jaws and a longitudinallymovable rack engaging with said pinion.

5. A binder comprising a pair of suitablysupported clamping-jaws, means for moving said jaws toward and from each other, means on said jaws for engaging leaves or sheets to be bound and overlapping cover-plates secured to said jaws and movable therewith interposed between said jaw-moving means and said sheet-engaging means.

6. A binder comprising suitably-supported clamping-jaws, means for moving said jaws toward and away from each other and a cover for said means and moving with said jaws and of sufficient width to cover said. moving means when said jaws are in their open position.

7. A binder comprising suitably-supported clamping-jaws, means for moving said jaws toward and away from each other and a coverplate suitably attached to each of said jaws and overlapping each other, whereby said means are covered in open or closed position.

8. A binder comprising suitably-supported clamping-jaws, a threaded rod in engagement with each of said jaws, means for operating said rod whereby said jaws are moved toward and away from each other and a cover-plate attached to each of said jaws and overlapping each other.

9. A binder comprising suitably-supported clam ping-jaws, a threaded rod engageable with each of said jaws, means for rotating said rod whereby said jaws are moved toward and away from each other, supports extending between said jaws in open or closed position and a cover-plate attached to each of said jaws and overlapping whereby the operating mechanism is protected when the jaws are either opened or closed.
