Be it known that I, CHARLEs M. ABEROROM- BIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Needle-Bar Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a joint for the connection of the needle-bar and its reciprocating device in that form of sewing machines in which the needle bar is mounted in an oscillating gate or frame for the formation of a Zigzag stitch. Heretofore it was common to provide some sort of universal joint or ball-and-socket joint for this connection; but there is unnecessary and oftentimes undesirable flexibility and undue wear in such universal or ball -and-socket joint, and I seek by the present invention to produce a joint or connection which while admitting of the necessary reciprocation of the needle-bar and the oscillation of its carrier or frame or gate will avoid the objections to prior constructions.
The invention consists of what might be needle-bar, and connection in full lines, with suflicient of the sewing-machine head in dotted lines to show the application of the improvement, the carrier being vibrated to the extreme right-hand position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with the carrier vibrated to the extreme left-handposition. The carrier, frame, or gate 1 is adapted to be pivoted at 2 to the head of the machine 'and has bearings 3 and A for receiving the needle-bar 5. The device 1 is provided with a transverse slot 6, through "which extends a headed screw 7 into the head of the ma chine to permit of the oscillation of the frame and at the same time prevent the frame from swinging outward away from the head of the machine. As shown in dotted lines, 8 is a lever pivoted to the frame at 9 and extending to a cam or other suitable device for oscillating the frame. All of these previouslydescribed parts are substantially the same as employed in the well-known Wheeler & W ilson sewing-machine.
The improvement consists of a cylindrical stud-shaft 10, perforated centrally, so as to be slipped upon the needle-bar and held thereon in given position by means of a set-screw 11, entered from one end thereof, and thus exposed outside of the bearing. Upon this studshaft is mounted a bearing-piece 12, perforated transversely to receive the stud-shaft before it is applied to the needle-bar and also perforated at right angles or vertically in alinement with the perforation in the studshaft, so as to be slipped upon the needle-bar. The vertical perforation in the bearing-piece 12 is of greater diameter than the needle-bar, so that a relative rocking motion between the needle-bar and its stud-shaft on the one hand and said bearing-piece on the other hand oc ours as the gate oscillates. The tongue 13 extends outwardly from the bearing, and it is adapted to have a sliding connection with a socket-piece 14 on the crank-link or other device connected With the needle-actuating shaft (not shown) of the sewing-machine for imparting reciprocating motion to he needlebar.
Obviously as the needle-bar is reciprocated and its carrier, or frame, or gate oscillated the stud-shaft 10 has a rocking motion in the bearing 12 as the tongue 13 works back and forth in the socket member 14, and thus the bearing-piece 12 and its tongue 13 are maintained in true alinement with the needle-barreciprocating device, and hence there is no cramping of thejoint and eomparativelylittle, if any, Wear of the parts. Moreover, a joint or connection is provided which is of simple and durable construction and its parts readily accessible and the whole capable of ready adjustment.
What I claim is- 1. A needle-bar connection for sewing-machines, comprising a stud-shaft perforated transversely so as to he slipped upon a needlebar, with its ends projecting from opposite sides of said needle-bar, means for securing said stud-shaft in place, and a bearing-piece perforated at right angles to movably engage the stud-shaft and needle-bar, and also having a tongue for connection with a needle-bar-actuating mechanism.
2. The combination of a needle-bar carrier, frame or gate adapted to be oscillated, a needle-bar mounted therein, means toreciprocate said needle-bar, and a connection between the needle-bar and the means for reciprocatingit, comprising a stud-shaft mounted upon the needle-bar and projecting laterally from opposite sides thereof, a bearing-piece mounted upon said stud-shaft, and means for slidably connecting the bearing-piece with the needlebar-reciprocating device whereby a relative rocking motion between the stud-shaft and needle-bar and the bearing-piece occurs as the frame oscillates.
3. The combination of aneedle-bar carrier. frame or gate, means to oscillate it, a needlebar mounted in said gate, means to reciprocate it, and a connection between the needle-bar and its reciprocating means, comprising a cylindrical stud-shaft perforated transversely so as to be slipped and secured upon the neodle-bar, a bearingpiece perforated horizontally and loosely applied to the stud-shaft and having a vertical perforation of greater diameter than the needle-bar to permit'a relative rocking motion of the needle-bar and studshaft as the frame oscillates, and a projection on the bearing-piece for effecting a sliding connection with the needle-bar-reciprocating means.
4:. The combination of a needle-bar carrier, frame or gate, means to oscillate it, a needlebar mounted in said gate, means to reciprocate it, and a connection between the needle-bar and its reciprocating means, comprising a cylindrical stud-shaft perforated transversely so as to be slipped upon the needle-bar, a setscrew for fixing the stud-shaft on the needlebar, a bearing-piece perforated horizontally and loosely applied to the stud-shaft and having a vertical perforation of greater diameter than the needle-bar, to permit a relative rocking motion of the needle-bar and stud-shaft as the frame oscillates, and a tongue on the bearing-piece for effecting a sliding connection with the needle-bar-reciprocating means.
