IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM SAFETY-VALVES.

T0 ALL WIIOM I'I MAY CONCERN:
Be it known 'that I, E. H. ASHGROFT, of Lynn, county of Essex, und Stato of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Safety-Valve for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon, in which like parts are represented by like letters in the several figures.
The nature oi' my invention consists in a new and improved safcty-valve for steam-boilers, to hc hereafter described.
To enable others skilled in thc art to make und use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construe4 tion and operation.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a halt` section of my invention, as also a half elevation of the some, A being the former and B the lutter. The vulve entire, :is shovrn und to he described, is to be screwed or otherwise secured to its scatto permit the steam to enter the same at :11. a iiJ a. hollow base, which is connected with thc boiler or other. vessel in which steam is generated. Screwed into a are two screwed standards bb at e.
The tops oi' these standards carry a cross-piece, d, slipping over the same, resting upon nuts e c, screwed down upon said standards., Above said cross-piece el there nre two other nuts fj', corresponding to the lower nuts e e, and clamping said cross-piece between said nuts. Through this cross-bar posses a rod, of any suitable shape, e, connected with a valve, 1), passing down through the hollow chamber fr, und the guidopieee y] secured to a. The valve or cover D is attached to the central rod e, and rests upon the valve-seat E. Between the valve or cover D, andthe cross-piece d above, there is a strong spirul spring, F, pressing upon both. .I peri'ornto the voire-scat E by un elbow-oriiiee, L, as seen in the several iigures, particularly iig. l. This spiriti spring F rends to keep the-cover or vulve D down upon its seat E, which rests upon n.
The operation is as follows: The tendency ofthe spring 1*', confined between D and d, is to press the former flown upon its sent E. Of course, suid valve-cover D can only bc raised to permit the escape of steam by the force oi' said steam overcoming the strength ofthe spring F. The steam presses upon tho buse of' D, und when it is stronr enough to raise said valve or cover to a, partial extent, it issues through those Miroir-apertures in valve-sect E, increasing the power of the surplus steam, and securing greater safety. After a. suihoient escupe of steam, thc vulve-cover D resumes its normal condition, and the-.stoom generated performs its function in safety.
The pressure upon the valve-cover D, which the steum is to overcome, is to be regulated by the depression or elevation of the cross-bar i?, through the double sets of nuts r :1nd netinY on the spring I".
Having thus described my invention, what I cluiin as new, and dfi-siro to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The valve-scat E, with its elbow-orifices 7i, in combination with vnlreeever D, rod. e, und sprincgr E, or its equivalent, arranged, constructed, and operated in the manner as snown und described, und i'cr the purpose set forth.
E. II. ASHROFT.
