This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tympan guides and holders for printing-presses.

The object of my invention is to provide readies of job-printing presses may be removed from the press when occasion demands and again replaced in exactly the same position it formery occupied, thereby saving the time and labor of preparing a new makeready for the job whenit again goes to press.

In accompanying drawings I have in various ways illustrated my improvements, in which drawings Figure 1 is a front view of the holder for removing the tympan from the press. Fig. 2 is a plan view of said holder, showing the tympan secured therein. Fig. 3 is an end View of said holder. Fig. 4 is a sectional side view through portions of the holder, tympan, and press-platen, showing the application of the tympan and holder thereto.

A supplemental portion or guide-clamp is also employed in connection with the holder proper, consisting of a bar 7 having integral therewith the laterally-disposed clamps 8,pro-

vided with set-screws 9, which bar also carries near its ends screws 10, provided with thumb-nuts 10 to secure the other bar member 11 thereto, said member 11 being provided with open slots 12, engaged over the screws.

In practice the tympan-sh eets A are attached to the press-platen 13 by the pivoted elongated U-shaped tympan clamps or bails 1 1 and 15, engaging over the upper and lower edges of the platen in substantially the same manner as heretofore. Now should it be desired to remove the tympan-sheets the clamp 14 is elevated, as shown in Fig. 5, thus releasing that end of the tympan-sheets. The holder is then slipped over the upper end of the platen and clamped in such position by the screws 2 as will permit the bars 3 and 5 occupying the offset space along the upper edge of the platen formally occupied by the said clamp or bail 14L. The pivoted bar 5 of the holder is then raised and the tympan end drawn therebetween and secured upon'the pins 4, after which the said bar 5 is returned to its normal position, thus clamping the tympan in exactly the same position as formerly. The bail or clamp 15 is then raised to release that end of the tympan, after which the holder and tympan are removed intact, as shown at Fig. 2. The supplemental portion or guide clamp is then clamped to the holder and tympan. as shown The guide-clamp is then unclamped from the holder and the latter removed for future service, leaving the tympan and guide-clamp intact,- as shown at Figs. 7 and 8. This tympanmay then when occasion demands be replaced exactly in the same position it formerly occupied upon the holder and the holder replaced in the same position upon the press-platen previous to again restoring the tympan to its original position.

It is to be understood that a number of like guide-clamps is to be employed for various tympans and that one holder will suflice, also that the holder proper may be in some cases employed without the supplemental portion.

Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A tympan guide and holder for job-printing presses, comprising a pair of clamp-bars hingedly connected at their ends adapted to clamp one end of the tympan-sheet therebetween and provided at said connecting ends with means to secure the same to the press the press-platen, and a pair of supplemental guide-clamp bars adapted to engage the same end of said tympan therebctween and provided with means to engage the said hinged clampbars, one of said hinged bars being provided with pins at its tympan-engaging surface and the other with openings to receive said pins, substantially as shown and set forth.

3. A tympan guide and holder for job-printing presses, comprising a pair of clamp-bars hingedly connected at their ends adapted to clamp one end of the tympan-sheet therebetween, and members at the connecting ends to secure the same to the press-platen, as shown and set forth.
