SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,850, dated August 9, 1904.

To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. SMITH, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Carmack, in the county of Lyon and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Thls invention relates to new and useful 1mprovements in Water-gates; and the object of ward return to their normal positions by gravity.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the tilting strips or boards.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a transverse beam supported upon standards B, which in the present instance are shown as recessed at their upper ends to receive said beams, although the latter may be supported in any suitable manner, preferably upon the opposite shores of a stream, and projecting from the beam at an inclination are the two rods C, having eyes C at their upper ends in which a rod D is supported a short distance above the beam. Several pivotal strips or boards upon edge are designated by letter F, and each has a substantially S-shaped slot F formed near the upper end thereof, and each of said slots has an opening K from one edge of the slat and provided for the purpose of allowing the S-shaped slot to engage over the rod carried by the eyes C in the manner illustrated in the drawings. Each of said strips has a widened portion E upon one face thereof provided for the purpose of holding the strips apart and leaving a space intermediate the lower portions thereof through which the wa ter is allowed to pass without raising the strips from their normal positions. Fastened to the beam A are the two bracket-arms N, which are set at an inclination and are adjacent to the opposite sides of the series of strips and are provided for the purpose of holding the latter in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. hen it is desired to remove one of the strips from the supportingrod, the strip is raised so that the upper curved end of the slot will be free from the rod, and then the strip is moved longitudinally until the rod is opposite the opening into the slot, after which said strip may be easily removed. When the various strips are adjusted for use, the lower ends of the strips are allowed to tilt up, with the rod having bearings upon the upper ends of the slots, as will be understood and as shown in the drawings.
WVhen an obstruction coming down the stream over which my improved gate is constructed comes in contact with one or more of said strips, the lower free ends of the same will rise, as shown in dotted lines in the drawings, and after the obstruction has passed the strips will resume their normal positions.
By the provision of a gate of the construction shown and described it will be observed that ready means is afforded for the free passage of any obstruction downstream, and the passage up the stream of live stock is eflectually prevented.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A water-gate comprising a horizontally disposed beam, supports therefor, a horizontally-disposed rod positioned adjacent to said beam, series of strips having slotted portions which are pivotally mounted upon said rod,
