PEROY C. OSTEEN, OF HENDERSONVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 753,096, dated February 23, 1904.
Application iiled March 30, 1903.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, PERGY C. OsTEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hendersonville, in the county of Hendersonand State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to detachable pipecouplings, and has for its object to construct a coupling for use on fire-hose, &c., where a simple and efficient detachable coupling is indispensable.
The novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Y Y.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my coupling with the two members disengaged. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the two members engaged. Fig. 3 is a detail of the lever. Fig. 4. is an end elevation of one member. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the other member.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the diierent views of the drawings.
My coupling comprises two longitudinallybored members, (designated 1 and 2, respectively.) Themember 1 comprises a head 3 and a neck 1, while the member 2 comprises a head 5 and a neck 6. The necks 4f and 6 are designed to serve as attachments for the hose. The head 3 is grooved transversely the bore 1il at 7 to form cheeks 8, and the head 5 is cut away on the sides parallel to the bore 2a to form a slab-sided neck 9 and shoulders 10. A hinge-strap 11 is mounted in a groove 12 in the member i and bears a lug 13, which is located to engage an eye 14, formed Ain a strap 14, seated in a groove 15, formed in the neck 9. This combination of lug 13 and eye 14 forms a detachable hinge. A groove 16 is formed in the head 3intermediate the cheeks, and a catch 17 is seated therein, which is beveled at 18 and cut off square at 18a. A'sti spring-latch bar 19 is attached to the member 5 and is provided with a catch 20, beveled at Serial No. 150,261. (No model.)
20a, which catch projects beyond the end of the neck 9 in position to engage the catch 17. W'ashers 21'surround the bore and abut to prevent leakage when the members are coupled.
In locking my coupling the neck 9 is engaged in the groove 7 and the lug 13 engaged in the eye 14?. The members 1 and 2 are then grasped one in each hand and clashed to force the latch-bar 19 to yield and permit the catches 17 and 20 to positively engage each other. To disengage the catches, a curved lever 22 is provided to be inserted under the end of the latch-bar 19.
I do not wish to be limited as to details-oiv construction., as these may be modiiiedin many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I y and the latter-reerred-to member having an iniiexible strap also let into a recess therein i and provided with a lateral or right-angled lug engaging the eye or aperture of said strap, the
abutting end of the first-referred-to member' also having a notch or recess receiving said lug where it enters the eye of said strap, said members having intertting or interlocking tongues and grooves at their meeting ends.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
PEROY C. OSTEEN. Witnesses:
HENRY D. OvERsTRnET, B. F. Hoon.
