Description
Letters Patent No. 752,949, dated farck24, 1.8.68.
IMPRVED 'SAD-IRON HAIYIDIJEI.V
Be it' knownthat I,"TH01;E1`AS S. MIINNISS, ofthe city of Meadville, in the'ounty of Crawford, and Sta-teef Pennsylvania, have invented anew and improved Mode of Constructing Sad-Iron Handles; and Ido hereby dee'lare. that: the Vfollowing is a fnll and exact description thereol'vreference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to'the letters of'reference marked thereon,
' I make my sadfirons in any `ofthe ordinaryformS, with two mortises onrecesses on the upper side, said mortisesbeing-widest at'thebottom, as seenjat A A, Figure 1, and A, Figure V2'.
The handleis ma'dein two parts, Iand riveted together at D, as ,seer in fig. 2," the'said rivet allowing the two lparts to articulate, and making a'fulerum., by which the grasp of the hand fixes the lower ends firmly in themortises. The parts of' the handle maybe made of either wrought or cast iron or othermetalr- A conven v ient way to make them is of common horseshoe-nail rod hammeredlinto form,as s een invFigure 5, B B, with a depression ofhalf thethicknfess'at E E, so that whenrivetedthe parts` may lit evenlyagainst each other,as seen at B B, Figure i4. They canbe riveted first, and afterwards '-hent, or if cast, they -will 'come from themoulds in the proper shape. When made of wrought iron; I will mak-e a hand-piece for each part,of t-in or other sheet metah'bent, as seen at and F F, Figure. 3, and soldered to the 'handlesas seen in iig. 2, the black lines showi ing'the parts in position, whilethe red lines show the same parts loose; but, when cast, the hand-piece can be east halt` rohnd andlhollow-vevry thin--with the other parts.
I make the mortises, and the parts-'ot` the handle to litV therein, flaring towards the bottom, because handle is more readily withdrawn; but, where the ironsl are very heavy, the lower ends-ofV B can be hooll i with a' correspondinglecess in the`mortises, so that it can be handled with a weaker rasp ofthe hand.
What I elaini as my hvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 The handle, in two parts, hinged as describe'dconstructed and operated as and. for the purpose set forth. l THOS. s. irmmss. v
'Witnesses A, Crises, JOHN MeLnAN.
