'roALL ywHoM I'r MAYQONCERN: v A
Be it' known 'that we, JSEPH HAYTHonN and JOSEPH MARTIN, both ot' Thompsonville, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curling-Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact' description thereof, reference being .had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. rIn 'the drawingsy i 'Figure 1 is a side view 5f a cnrdingmaohine having our improvements.
Figure 2 a planview of improvements as applied to the machine.
Thisv invention consists in imparting a reciprocating motion to the strippersof'a ending-machine, so as to more thoroughly distribute the stock from which the threads are formed, besides effecting other important objects which will be hereafter mentioned. These strippers are small"ending-cylinders, which, revolvin'gmorerapdly than the workers Whichthcv are next to, catch or strip the stocky-frein the latter and pass it again to the main cylinder, which they are alsojin proximity to. They thus perform the function hf thoroughly working up the v stock. Now, by giving these strippers o. longitudinal reciprocating motion, theynot only more thoroughly work 'upthe libre, but more'equally spread it over the main'cylinder, tea-ring apart whatever inequalities or bunches mayheini'tL. l I l In'the drawings it is shown that the strippers A A have small pulleys,'B B', upon one end of each respectively. These pulleys have grooves, a a', sunk in their circumferential faces, into which works each end of a lever, O, which is pivoted upon the frame K,`at b. Upon the shaft D of the main cylinder L is a cam, E, upon which worlrs'a lever, m, grooved at one -end c, so as `to fit upon the circumferential rim. of t-he cam, and turned' at the other or upperend over into on elbow, d, which works in the groove a of the pulley B. -This lever is .pivoted nt or`near`the centre tothe framc'K.
i -By revolving theshaft D with the cam E, the lever an will be Worked upon its pivot, thus movingthestripi per A'laterally in its' bearings, which are made so as to allow this motion. This Works the lever C upon its `pivot I1, causing the stripper A to move in the same manner as -the one, A, except that the' lever C, working on its centre, causes the two strippers to move in oppositel directions at th-e same time. Y
We do not` wish to confine ourselvesto this exact methodlof imparting the. notion to the strippers, as 'the device for operating them may be altered Without' affecting our invention in-its main poi-nts. Allthe strippers of' a. ending-machine may be operated substantially in the .manner shown, and the `means used may be also nppliedto the workers O O O in'the sume manner.
By this means we obtain an important improvement lnthe eardingimachinc, rendering the work much 'more even, and also causing less waste, of stock-,thc laterally-reciproeating motion of the strippers preventing the `same from Working off the ends ofthe strippers, workers, and, in a measure, from the main cylinder, 'by catching it and carrying it back to the workers or cylinder, as the case may be'.
We disclaim, entire lyvibrating or in any way moving the mam cylinder, or fancy,,or giving any other motion to either than the ordinary revolving motion. l
Now, having described our invention, what we claim` ns new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Imparting a. reciprocating motion tothe Workers or strippersof a. cardingmachine, substantially in the manner and for the purpose-herein `shown and setforth. I i y v JOSEPH `HAY'llllORlT,
JOSEPH MART-IN.
