To` ALL WHOM iT MAY coNennN; p
Be it known that I, SAMUEL I-l. CoWLEs, of-Oakville, in the county of Liteheld,.and in the State of Conneeticut, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings, i
and the letters of referen'oe'marlsed thereon. In the annexed'drawings, making apart of this specification- Figure represents a seetiouof'a ear-coupling, showing the lconstruction and relative position of its parts.
A represents the draw-head,l provided with a daring mouth and a chamber, which is pivoted the drawhook B, and is'fastened the slotted guideC.` The draw-head A may be constructed in any of the ordinary forms and manner. B represents-a peculiar-shaped draw-hook, as seen in the drawings,pivoted in the chamber of the draw-head A, and is provided with a steel or other spring,l z, inserted in its back or upper side in such manner as will hold, and for thepurpose of keeping the front end of said hook B down close to the lower side of the mouth of. the draw-head A. Itis also provided with a vertical 'pin or rod, g, wh'iohpas'ses up through the top of thedraw-head, andV is designed as a convenient handle for-the purpose of raisingup the front end of the hook B to uncouple ears, whenever it may be desired to do so. C Vrepresents a metallic guide, screwedor secured to the top of the chamber in the druwfhead A, and provided n'ith aslot, e, in whichiits 4and. works the hook B, and is designed to hold the same steady and brace it against lateral strains.- It is placed far enough l back from the'mouth of the draw-head'A, so that its face or frontl side is behind and -nearly'parafllel with the :catch of the hook B, and of such length that the link 1D may pass beneath it when pushed to'o far into the chamberl of the drawhead A.' The outer or front end of the hook B is bevelled from its upper side, so that when the link D strikes it, it is pressed up, and the said link passes under and is caught by .the said hook B.
' I am aware that various-shaped hooks have been used within the draw-head before, -somo of which are constrncted Vsniilarto the one herein described i' I What I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slotted metal guide C placed within the mouth of the draw-head A, as specified, and used in combination with the pivoted hook B,- the front Qi?- vwhich is bevelled from top to bottom, all constructed and operating as set forth;
In `testimony` that-I claim the foregoing, I havejherennto set my hand, this 17th day of December, v1867.
