SIDE-COME.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 756,545, dated April 5, 1904. Application tiled November 13, 1902. Renewed February 2, 1904.. Serial No. 191,757. (No model.)
T0 all whom it Wawy concern:
Be it lrnown that I, OTTO VALLENDAR, merchant, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Charlottenburg, near Berlin, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Side-Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention involves a novel arrangement of the teeth of combs and their relation and connection to the back or body portion, whereby a gripping' action is produced on the bunches of hair contained between the sides of the adjacent teeth when the comb is in use. To attain the desired results, the back or body portion is curved longitudinally and consists or is formed of an elastic or resilient material, the teeth being connected thereto and extending therefrom in such manner that preferably all of the teeth are normally at an angle to one another, their points or outer ends being closer together than their inner ends or part which connect with the back. Such an arrangement results in a separation of the teeth or a movement toward parallelism when the back of the comb is flexed t0- ward a straight line. In the application of the comb tothe hair the back is straightened, and
the teeth then being substantially parallel freely enter the hair, and when the back is released it by its resilience again assumes its normal curved condition, and so cause the points of the teeth to approach one another and close on and grip the hair contained between them.
In the embodiment of this invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings the back is shown somewhat curved in cross-section and also curved in longitudinal section, the row of teeth being connected to the inner curved surface of the back and extending at an angle therefrom, a part of the teeth adjacent to their inner ends being beneath or overlapped by the back.
Figure l is a front View. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line A B of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line C Dof Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a View of the inside of the comb with the back straightened.
It will be observed that the general directions of the teeth when the comb is in normal condition are on lines approximately converging toward a common center and also that the teeth are arranged on a curved plane of a section of a cone, the general direction of the teeth being toward the apex of the cone.
As shown in the drawings, this improved side-comb consists of the back a, which is of curved cross-section as well as of curved longitudinal section and made of any suitable elastic material, such as tortoise-shell, celluloid, gutta-percha, or even sheet metal. The teeth are fixed to the inner side of the back a along the middle line of the same at an acute angle, so that the points of the teeth I) are somewhat distant from and slightly project over the lower edge of the back a. The teeth are naturally directed inward toward the center of the comb, so that their points are closed together.
To use the comb, the back a is straightened,- whereupon the points of the teeth open. The comb is then inserted into the hair at a suitable place and the teeth catch the hair between them, when the back of the comb is released and resumes its original curvature.
To take the comb out of thehair, it is merely necessary to straighten the back of the comb, so that the teeth open, and the comb can be removed without any difficulty.
I have shown and described the comb as adapted as a side-comb and have shown the preferred form of my invention in detail; but I do not'wish to conline myself to the details of construction illustrated.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isW
1. A comb, comprising a curved resilient back, having teeth connected thereto and extending therefrom normally at an angle to one another, the points of said teeth being closer together than their inner ends of connection with the back. v
2. A comb, comprising a curved resilient back having teeth connected to and extending rearwardly from the back at an angle thereto,
4L. A side-comb consisting of a back of elas-v tie material of curved cross-section and of curved longitudinal section, and of av row of teeth the upper end of Which is fixed to the inner side of the baclrat an acute angle and directed so that their points touch each other, and separate When the elastic back of the comb is straightened, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
