Description

No. 754.519. PATENTED MAR. 15, 1904. S. L. TROUPE & M. G. BROOKS.
HAT PIN OR FASTENER. urmou1on rn.nn un. 10. 1903.
110 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented March 15, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE. p
SAMUEL L. TROUPE AND MARGARET C. BROOKS, OF PHILADLPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA; SAID'BROOKS ASSIGNOR TO SAID TROUPE.
HAT PIN OR FASTENER.
SPECIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,519, dated. March 15, 1904.
Application filed March 10, 1903.
Be it known that we; SAMUEL L. TROUPE and MARGARET C. BROOKS, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat Pins or Faste1ners, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists of an improverfient in hat pins or fasteners provided With means for ngaging with the hair of the wearer, whereloy the bat is firmly secured to the head and cannot be removed or disturbed without proper manipulation of the device.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as Will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a bottom plan view of a hat pin or fastener embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on line ne m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-' sponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a hat pin or fastener, the saine consisting of a body portionB, which in the present instance is a plate, preferably forrned of thin metal, havinga postC projecting from one side thereof in substantially the center, said pin having suitable screw-threads thereon. Secured to the body portion B at substantially the points D and E are the curved pins or arms F and G, said arms beingbent downwardly at a point substantially adjacent the points D and E, while the free ends H and J of said arms are curved down- Wardly or avvay from the body portion and are pointed and extend in opposite directions from each other, it being noted that-ther dius of the curved arrns is sbstantially equal to that of the plate or body portion B, although, of course, it Will be apparent that this is not necessary.
K designates a head of the form of a nut, having secured thereto or which forrns part thereof a suitable ornament L, in the present Serial No. 147,129. (No modal.)
instance the representation of a flower, and aoting as a handle.
The operation is as follows: The head is 'removed from thepost C, which latter is then passed through the hat of the wearer ata suitable point 50 asto appear on the outside thereof, the plate and pins being on the inside of the bat, after which the head is screwed or otherwise fastened to the end of the post C prOjecting on the outside of the bat, so that the fastener is thus secured to the bat. When the hat is placed upon the head, by giving a turn to the handle, and consequently to the post 0, which now for1ns a journal, the plate B Will be rotated, and with it the pins F and G, and cause the latter to enter the hair of the wearer and grasp the same, holding the hat firrnly in position and in such a manner that the same cannot be re* moved or disturbed without again turning the fastener in the opposite direction to release the pins from engagement with the hair.
It Will be noted that the downwardly and helically curved ends H and J of the arms or pins act as a screw to enter under tresses of the hair of the wearer and that when these tresses rest on the level body portions F and G of thepins there is no tendency to rotate the device in the opposite direction and thereby loosen it, as Would -be the caso if the pins had a helical curve for their entire length.
It Will be evident that various changes may be made. by those skilled in the art which may-come within the scope of our invention,
and we do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, .is-
1. [A hatfastener comprising a body portioh, apost on one side thereof, a head engagealole vvith said post and a plurality of curved pins secured to the other side of said body portion and having arc-shaped portions spaced away from and in a plane parallel' Wibh said body and integral end portions bent with said disk and integral pointed ends bent downwrd t0 a helical curVe. d 1 doWnward t0 a helical curve.
2. A mt-fastener comprising a is a post secured axially on 0116 face thereof, a head en- 5 gageable with said post and a plurality of curved pins secured to the other face of said Witnesses: disk and'having arc-shaped body portions JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, spaced away from and in a plane, parallel WM. CANER WIEDERSEIM.
