REUBEN HENRY SMITH, OF NUNEATON, ENGLAND.
GAM E APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,846, dated October 20, 1903.
Application filed November 3,1902. Serial No. 129,889. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN HENRY SMITH, a subject of Edward, King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Clifton Villa, Dugdale street, Nuneaton, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented a certain new and useful Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the game of tabletennis, ping-pong, or such like table games; and it consists of certain appliances for securing the posts to the table by means of brackets or attachments to said posts, whereby they may be held in upright position for use or may be swung out of sight under the table-top when out of use. They are, therefore, always ready when a game is proposed to be played, the work of bringing them into position occupying only a few seconds, and even less time is required to put them out of sight again.
Referringto the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention,Figure'l shows the bracket in metal attached to the tabletop, the post being upright and ready for use. Fig. 2 shows the post folded down horizontally in line with the metal bracket, both post and bracket being swung underneath the table-top. Fig. 3 shows in plan the blank from which the metal bracket is formed. Figs. 4 and 5 show side view andend view, respectively, of the bracket. Fig. 6 shows the lower end of the post. Figs. 7 and 8 show plan and side View, respectively, of a wooden bracket. Fig. 9 shows a form of telescopic bracket.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 6, each post A is provided with a bracket B at its bottom. Said bracket is conveniently formed in metal from the blank shown in Fig. 3, said blank being bent up along the dotted lines into the form shown at Figs. 4 and 5. The bracket is attached to the post by a pin 0 or by a simple form of butt-hinge, so that the two can be brought either in line with each other or at right angles, the pin working stiffly by preference. Such bracket may be hinged upon a vertical pivot (suchas a large-headed screw D, which when once fixed need never be removed, the screw being screwed into the under side of the table E) in such a way as to be capable of being swung horizontally out from the same or returned at will. When swung out from the edge of the table, the post can be raised up to a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, ready for use. Afterward it can be lowered toa horizontal position and swung back with the bracket underneath the table-top, as shown in Fig. 2. Such bracket may be made in two parts, B and B fastened together by a pin O, one sliding within the other, so that it will be extensible for the purpose of enabling the post to be set at several inches from the table edge, if and when desired. (See Fig. 9.)
As shown, various modifications of the above may be introduced without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In games such as table-tennis, pingpong and the like, an appliance for securing the post to the table, consisting of a bracket, a vertical pivot within one end of the bracket adapted to be secured in the table for the purpose of holding said bracket thereto while permitting angular movement of the free end of the bracket, also a pin within said free end, and a post mounted at its lower end upon said pin in such a manner that the lower end of the side of the post which is nearest to the table acts as an abutment against the bracket in order that the post may be maintained either in line with the bracket or upright thereon at will, as andfor the purpose specified.
2. In games such as table-tennis, ping-pong and the like, an appliance for securing the post to the table, consisting of an extensible bracket made in two parts one adapted to slide within the other, a vertical pivot secured in the table for holding one of said parts by one end, while permitting angular movement of the other end, means for both looking together and releasing the two parts aforesaid, a butt-hinge upon the outer extremity of the other part combined with means upon the lower end of the post aforesaid whereby the post thus hinged upon said part may be brought and maintained either in line with the bracket or upright thereon at will, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In games such as table-tennis, ping-pong and the like, an appliance for securing the post to the table, consisting of a bracket, a
vertical pivot within one end of the bracket adapted to be secured in the table for the purpose of holding said bracket thereto while permitting angular movement of the free end of the bracket, also a pin within said free end, and a post mounted at its lower end upon said pin in such a manner that the lower end of the side of the post which is nearest to the table acts as an abutment against the bracket when the post is upright therein, as and for'the purpose specified.
4. In games such as table-tennis, ping-pong and the like, an appliance for securing the post to the table, consisting of a bracket, a vertical pivot within one end of the bracket adapted to be secured in the table for the purpose of holding said bracket thereto while permitting angular movement of the free end of the bracket, also a pin within said free end, and a post mounted at its lower end upon said pin in such a manner that the lower end of the side of the post which is nearest
