A To all whom it may concern/ Be it known that we, JOHN LOUIS HALLER and GEORGE L. BAKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Bushton, in the county of Rice and State of Kansas, have invented new Vand useful Improvements in Harness, of

v coperating parts of harness without the necessity of breaking the strap-splice.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and,

claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of harness shown applied and embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved attachment. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the attachment.

Similarnumerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

The numeral 1 designates an elongated metallic strip, which is riveted or Otherwise secured within the loop of a strap 4, one of the rivets or fastenings securing the one extremity of the metallic strip also being utilized to fasten the free extremity of the loop to the main body of the strap. The front end of the metallic strip lis bent to form a D-shaped eye 2, the free end of the strip embodied in the formation of the eye being disposed vertically, as at 3, and has its edge in contact with the' body of the strip 1 above, as clearly shown by Fig. 2, and by this means the loop of the strap 4 is held separated and a rear guard provided for a purpose which will presently appear. The application of the strip l along the inner side of one member of the loop of the strap 4. stiffens and reinforces that part of the said loop which continues into the main portion of the strap directly receiving the strain, and, furthermore, a more durable fastening for the attachment is provided by the extension of the metallic strip over the inner side of one member of the straploop, as set forth. The D-shaped eye 2 is held closely against the inner portion of the bend of the strap-loop and provides a metallic seat to receive the connecting member of a D 5, the latter having parallel arms 6 and 7, formed with terminal-alining perforations 8 to receive a bolt 9, with a sleeve l0 thereon to form anaantifrictionalbearing for the said D, the bolt 9 and sleeve 10 comprising the connecting member for the D. The bolt 9 is detachably held in the terminals of the arms 6 and 7, and when it is desired `to disconnect the D 5 it is only necessary to release the bolt 9, and in making the connection of the D with the strap the rear terminals of the parallel arms 6 and 7 are disposed on Opposite sides of the front extremity of the strap and the bolt 9 inserted through said terminals and the forward bent extremity of the metallic strip.

The guard provided by the terminal 3, serves a double purposenot only limiting the rearward movement of the D, but also separating the loop members of the strap and holding them apart, so that a guide or retaining loop is provided through which a cross-strap or the belly-band, as shown in Fig. l, may be passed and be free to move without danger of binding when a direct pull is exerted upon the strap to which thedevice is connected. The device as constructed not only strengthens the loop, but also prevents its collapse and divides it into two separate parts, the

front one of which may carry the D and the other be used for any directpurpose, such as shown in Fig. 1.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The combination with a looped strap end, of a metallic strip Within the loop and extending along the inner side of one member thereof, the forward extremity of the metal strip being bent upon itself and closely engaging the inner surface of the front portion of the loop and having its terminal carried to a point intermediate thel length of the loop and bent at angle with its edge extending transversely of the loop and firmly engaging the opposite member of the metallic strip, to form a reinforce to prevent the looped strap end from collapsing and to divide the said lloop into front and rear portions, separated JOHN LOUIS HALLER.
