SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 748,187, dated December 29, 1903.

Be it known that I, SIDNEY HOLLENBECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves or Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gloves and mittens, its object being to provide a reinforcement for the glove or mitten which will protect the gripping portion of the thumb and body of the glove or mitten and which will also prevent ripping of the thumb-seam.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of a mitten constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail of the reinforcing-pad removed from the mitten, and Fig. 3 is a section on line :c x of Fig. l with the knit portion of the mitten removed.
In the drawings I show my invention applied to an ordinary construction of mitten consisting of a knit body A, having a leather covering for the hand and finger portion. A leather tab 3 is shown extending from the covering 2 upward upon the wrist portion.
In order to protect the gripping portion of the mitten, I provide a reinforcing-pad B, preferably of leather, corresponding to the main covering 2 of the mitten. The pad B is secured by its edgel between the edges of the adjacent seam of the mitten, as shown in Fig. 3, and is stitched along its edge 5 to the body of the mitten-covering. The pad B is lthe mitten will be protected against wear and separation.
While I have shown my invention applied to a leather-covered knit mitten, it will be evident that it can be similarly applied to other construction of mittens and gloves.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A glove or mitten of the class described, comprising a body portion andA connected thumb, a pad secured over the inner surface of the thumb and extending over the portion of the glove or mitten underneath the thumb, said pad having upon its inner side a portion which extends upwardly alongside the thumb and which covers the seam which connects the inner side of the thumb and body of the glove.
