IMPROVEU SPRING-BBD BOTTOM.
TO ALL WHOM IT'MAYCONCERN:
Be itY known that we, SAMUEL F. BOUTON audNATHAN P.. AMES, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have' invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring-Bed Bottoms; andwe do hereby declare and make known-that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and gures marked thereon, which form part of this specification. y
Our said invention relates to-that class of spring-bed bottoms in which spiral springs are employed to support slats upon which the mattress Or-bed res-ts; and it 'consists in a novel mode Of securing theupper ends ot' the spiral springs to the aforesaid slats, so that the springs may be retained in the desired vertical position,
while at the same time the springs may when desired, be readily detached from the slats and their lower sup ports, thus enabling ythe entire bed-bottom to `be taken apart and put up again at pleasure.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use Our saidinvent-ion, we will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference, in so doing, to the drawings aforesaid, isn whichi .Figure 1 represents a plan or top view O' our invention,
Figure 2 a side view of the same, and
AEigure 3 an enlarged view of one of the springs, as seen from beneath, showing theumode of Vattachment totheslats aforesaid.
Similar letters Of reference, in the Yseveral figures, denote the same parts of our said invention.
A represents a. bedstead, provided 'with two cross-slats or pieces, marked B, upon which one end of the spiral springs D rest,'being secured in place by the entering of the ends of the wire Of which saidspirings'are formed, marked a, into suitable' holes or sockets, b, in the supporting-slats B, as shown in the drawings. Upon the said springs, arranged as shown, are placed and secured, as hereinafter described, a. series Of longitudinal slats, C, upon which the mattress or bed is'arranged'or placed. The said springs are secured removably to the slats in the following manner: The Wire forming the uppervcoil of the springs is bent out, as shown at oZ,'in fic. 3; then, doubling back, is `again bent, substantially in the direction of a tangent `to the circumference coil, forming aV straight arm ot' a suitable length from e. Upon the slat C is secured, by screws, nails, Or their equivalent, a metallic strip, bent up'as shown, so as to form a socket or semi-tube, c, into which the arme, upon the spring, may enter, and from which it may be withdrawn.
`Freni the above description it will be seen that by this arrangement and construction, vthe springs are kept in a vertical position, thus retaining the form in which they have the greatest elasticity, theesockct e, acting upon the arm e, preventing any lateral displacement or tipping over sideways, while the projection cZ, or its equivalent, to prevent the rotation of the arm e in the socket c, prevents. any tipping of the springs towards the head or foot of the bed. Thus the springs are securely kept in position, and the slats C secured from lat- -Oral displacement, making a, very superior and durable bed, which can, however, be takenapart for convenience in transportation, or moring from one room to `another, and set up foruse again, as desired, which is a very important and desirable feature. In order to more securely attach the springs to the slats a. pin with a hook upon, the end" may be inserted in the slat, so as to` clasp and hold the wire oi' the spring upon the slet, and so that 'ny turning said hook around, it wili release the coil,- and permit it to be detached, aspdesired.
We claim the combination of the arms and c, formed. upon the coil of the spring Bras shown, and a socket, c, applied or secured to the slat C, in the manner and for the purposes specied.
