UNITED STATES .Patented December 8, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. ERNST, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO A. LESCHEN .83 SONS ROPE COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
COMBINED'CLAMP AND HANGER-ROD FOR BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,317, dated December 8, 1903. Application filed May 22,1903. Serial No. 168,226. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,GEORGE F. ERNST, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Clamp and Hanger-Rod for Bridge Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved clamp and hanger-rod for connecting the suspension-cables of a bridge to the roadway sills or timbers, the object being to provide an arrangement whereby the hanger-rods can be individually applied to the cables after the latter are placed in position and held from movement thereon, andbeing formed in one part with the clamps there is no loose or lost motion between the two.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a side elevation illustrating in outline a portion of a bridge with my improved clamps and hanger-rods applied. Fig. II is a side view of one of the clamps and its hanger-rod. Fig. III is a similar view illustrating a modified form of the clamp. Fig. IV is a sectiontaken on line IV IV, Fig. II.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a pier, 2 one of the supporting-cables, and 3 one of the roadway sills or timbers of an ordinary bridge. As is well known, it is customary to connect .the'cables 2 and the sills or timbers 3 together, and to do this in an inexpensive and effective manner is the object of my invention; and to this end, my invention consists in a combined clamp 4 and ceive the cables 2 and to be tightened there-- on so as to prevent them from slipping while the hanger-rods depend to the sills or timbers 3, to which they are held by nuts 6. It will be observed that the'clamps can be attached to the cables after the latter are placed in position, and when tightened up they will be held to their adj ustments, while the hanger- V rods being formed as a part thereof produce a form of connection between thecables and sills which has no lost playor motion, and the device is one which can be quickly and readily placed in position.
The lower member of the clamp shown in Fig. 11 is formed with .a beveled upper face, so as to be in line with the direction of the length of the cable to prevent kinking of the latter. I
I claim as my invention 1 1. In a bridge construction, a clamp having a beveled face and a hanger-rod forming part of said clamp and which depends therefrom and is adapted to be connected to the roadway sills or timbers of the bridge, subto the roadway sill or timber of the bridge,
substantially as set forth. 1
- GEO. F. ERNST. In presence of- NELLIE V. ALEXANDER, E. S. KNIGHT.
