Description

sjs. REMBE-ET, 0F4 MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
Letters Patent No.'74,594, dated February 18, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN =BREEGHLOADING FIRE-ARMS.
@In .stimuli maar tu in there @zum a'tmt mit mating gni n tige sans,
To ALL wHoM I'rv MAY ooNcEEn.:v f Y` Be it known that I, S. S. REMBERT, of Memphis, in the'county of Shelby, and State oi' Tennessee, have invented some new and useful Improvements in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms, and cartridges for the same; `and do hereby declare that the followingvis va full, clear, and exact description thereof, whichv will enable those skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. l
llhe present invention relates to double-barrelled breechrloading fire-arms more particularly, and to cartridges for the same.
The inwentionl consists, first, in a projection at the breech-end of the barrels, between/the two, of such a shape, in combination withv aeorresponding-shaped recess or notch in the upper portion of the stock or butt, that, when such projection 'is in the vsaid recess, the barrels will be held iirmly and securely in position while being discharged; second, in a novel connection between the trigger-guard and the barrels, in combination with hinging the barrels to the butt or frame, whereby, by properly swinging such trigger-guard, the barrels can be thrown up and out of' place, for removing or inserting a cartridge, and broughtback into'position, according as may be desired; third, in a cartridge-case, provided with a nipplein a novel and peculiarmanner; fourth, in a. novel-constructed nipple for'the cart1idgecase; fifth, in afsirnple attachment to the gun-barrels, for extractin the cartridge-case therefrom. In the accompanying plate of' drawings, the improvements embraced in the present invention are il1ustrated` v y A, I
Figure 1 being a plan or top view of a portion of a doupTe-barreiled gun at the breech, and of the barrel.
Figure 2, a longitudinal section, taken in the plane of -the` line :v rv, iig. l.
Figure 3, a central section through a.v cartridge made according to one part of the present invention.
Similar letters of reference ipdicate corresponding parts.
A A, in the drawings, represent the two barrels of a doubledfbarr'elled fire-arm. B, a projectionat breechv end of barrels A, betwden the two. The shape of this projection, in cross-section, is shown in iig. 1, and'in the opposite direction, iu the section, iig. 2. C, a. recess' or notch in butt of frame D, of corresponding shape to projection B, in whichrecess the said projection lits when the barrels are down and inposition, firmly fastening and securing the barrels. The two barrels are hung, by a pivot .at E, to the front end of the frame D, so that they can be swung upward.. F, the trigger-guard, made of the general bent form in the direction of its length, shown'in tig. 2, and hungat one end, G, to the under side of the butt, so as to swing thereon. H, a link-piece or block, pivoted at one endto trigger uard at I, and'at another end pivoted or hinged to the under side ofthe barrels. By the arrangement of the trigger-guard, and its connection withthe barrels through the link-piece above described, the barrels can be swung up audfrom the sto-ck o r butt-frame, or down upon the same, accord'- ng as may be desired, the barrels, when in their upward position, having their ends open and exposed. .J, a cartridge, made of a tapering sha-pe upon its inside, with thesides at thefopen end the thinnest. lfhis'cartridgecase J also, upon its outside, is made tapering fromv end to end, so as to t better within the barrel, which is made of a correspondingftaper, or nearly so, at its breech-end, for the purpose of receiving the-same. K, a nipple, projecting from upper side of cartridge-case, and extending 'down through, across thefeartridge, resting by its lower end upon asteel head, N, screwed 'into the under side of the case. On this head the percussioncap or'wafer is to be placed, when, it' the nipple is struck, will explode-the cartridge, as is obvious. The breech-end of the`barrel isisuitably cut out to allow the nipple'ot' the cartridge to extend through for the huur- 'tner of the fire-'arm to strike and explode it. In iig. 3, the nipple there shown is like the ordinarynipplcs to fire-arms, and is secured in -p'osition upon 'and to the cartridge-vease. O, the.cartridge-extractor, consisting ol" a lever-handle, R, hung by a pivot to the side of the barrel, in position for its upper'end t'o seiz'e the nipple-of the cartridge, and t'hus'to force it out whenmovedin theproper direction therefor. i I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The retractors O, pivoted to theisides of the stock, and operated'by the trigger-guard, whereby, as the barrels are raised by pushing forward the trigger-guard, thefupper ends of the retractors catch against'the nipple K, and withdraw thecartridge, as herein shown and described'. v
2. The nipple K, when inserted inthe cartridge-case J, with its lower end resting upon the screw-block N, in the under side ,of said cartridge, as herein shown andl described.
