IMPROVEMENT 1N FRUIT-JARS.

Be it known that I,.E. B. WHITMORE, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, anzIState of. New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Jars; and I'do (hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of `this specification.

My ,invention consists in a spring-bail, of peculiar form, in combination with a double-inclincdplane or cam-way ofthe cover, whereby an unusual degree of elasticity is secur'ed to the cover, to compensate for expansion and contraction ofthe glass; the saidbail, from its peculiar form, also answering as a hold for the. fingers in carrying and handling the jar, as hereinafter set forth.

As represented in the drawings, A is a jar, of ordinary form and construction, having a planetop, a, on

which rests @the rubber packing-ring b, pressed down by cover B. The cover is preferably made ot" pressed glass, and it is provided, centrally, onY top, with 'a double-inclined plane or cam-way, c, substantially ot' the form shown. The sides of the neck of the jar are provided with bearings for the bail C, consisting of depressions d al and swellsff, blown in the glass. By this means the bent ends g g of the bail can be expanded and inserted horizontally under the swells, and then, when turned inte a vertical position, they hold firmly in place `by the natural spring of the bail, and cannot be easily disconnected. The bail consists simply of a piece `o' wire, fashioned as shown, viz, with double bows or bends h L at the sides, on top, and with a reversed or depressed bend, z', in the centre. This reverse bend is such as to bear and -bind closer and closer on the inclined plane or cam-way c, as the bail is raised toward a vertical position, and thus press the cover-more closely on the packing. I prefer also to make side bends tvk, as shown.

Clamps, having their bearings at the sides of the neck of thel jar, and resting on top the cover, have been before known, as shown in Patents Nos. 58,998 and 63,193; but in such casesthere'has been but little, if any, elasticitypr spring tothe clamps. Glass jars are subject to much change by expansion and contraction under diicrernt temperatures. If the bail or clamp is simply bent over the `cover, and is rigid, theglass is liable to be broken when expanded, and the cover is liable to leak when contracted. This can be remedied only'by `giving the bail sutleient space at the top, and furnishing it with such a degrecot` elasticity as will allow the cover to adapt itself to the top of the jar under all conditions. This ei'ect is accomplished in my case by the ,bends h h z', which, by rising at some distance from the cover, and still bearing thereon, yield readily in either direction to suit the action of the Thus, under expansion, the spring bends outward, and under contraction itbends downward and keeps the jaralways tight. .I am not aware that thiseect has eve'r before been accomplished. l y In addition to the above, the bends h it serve as convenient finger-rests in carrying the jar, either before or after it has been opened. This is of very great-advantage.
