GEORGE BOHNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
INCANDESCENT VAPOR-LA M P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 732,334, dated June 30, 1903.
' Application led September 30, 1901. Serial No. 76,998. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be itknown that I, GEORGE BOHNER, aeitizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incandescent Vapor-Lamps, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention relates to that class of lamps in which the reservoir or font and the vapor-generator areconnected together permanently and are adapted to have detachable connection with .the burner and the lampsupport in manner to permit of the ready removal and replacement of the reservoir and vapor-generator in filling said reservoir and other like usual operations.
The present improvement has for its object to provide a durable, efficient, and convenient connecting means between the combined reservoir and vapor-generator and the combined burner and burner-support which is adapted to permit of a ready detachment and removal of such combined reservoir and generator and its subsequent replacement in a substantial and secure manner, all as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of the present invention, Figure 1' is a side elevation, with parts-in section, of a hanging vapor-lamp embodying the present improvements; Fig. 2, a fragmentary perspective view of the connecting means in a partly-separated condition; Figs. 3 and 4, fragmentary sec- Ytional elevations of modified forms of connecting means.
Similar numerals of reference indicate likev parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, l represents a vaporburner, preferably of the type known 5 is an air-pump adapted to generate apresv sure of air in the tank or reservoir 4 above tube arrangedimmediately above the vaporburner 1, so as to be heated thereby during the continued burning of the lamp. One end of said generator is connected permanently in any suitable manner to the supply tank or reservoirt, while the other end is provided with a jet-head 7, the jet-opening of which is adapted to discharge directly into the open end of the com mingling passage or tube 2 of the arm 2. In the construction shown the open end of the commingling tube or passage consists in a horizontal branch 2" of said commingling-tube.
8 is a valve-casing arranged intermediate of the tank 4 and the vapor-generator 6 and provided with the usual manually-operated valve-stem 9, by which the supply of hydrocarbon from the tank 4 to the vapor-generator is controlled and regulated.
No claim is made to the general construetion so far described, as l am aware that the same has been proposed prior to my present invention. The novelty of the present invention consists in a construction and combination of parts in which a combined-supply-tank and vapor-generator is adapted to be moved horizontally into a proper position in the supporting-frame or harp of the lamp and held in such position against anyY tendency to displacement.
In the preferred construction of the present invention, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the valve-casing 8 is provided with a non-circular portion l0, which is adapted to engage between side or cheek plates 1l on a vertical extension 12 of the lamp-frame 2. The said extension 12 is also provided with a guide-sleeve 13 for the passage and reception of the vapor-generator tube 6 as the same is moved horizontally into 'its position of use in the lamp and which eX- tension may constitute an integral part of the frame or harp 2. It is preferable in some cases to make it separate from the said harp 2 and provide it with a pendent shank 14, fitting a bore inthe upper end of the harp and IOO . secured therein by means of a set-screw 15,
engaging in a peripheral groove 16 in said shank. With the above-described construction the elevated supply-tank with its connections are held in proper position with relation to the lamp-frame or harp against a tendency to turn down by gravity.
In the modied construction illustrated in Fig. 3 the parts are maintained in position against the above-mentioned tendency of the supply-tank to turn downward by a curved and forked extension 17 of the valve-casing engaging the harp or frame at a point below the point of engagement of said valve-casing with the upper end of said harp.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4 the main body of the Valve-casing is made non-circular for a like purpose, and in this figure is illustrated means for preventing a horizontal movement of the combined supplybowl and vapor-generator away from a proper position with relation to the comminglingtube, 85C., and which is apt to occur with a constant jarring of the lamp in continued use. In the construction shown, 18 is a recess or indentation in the under side of the valvecasing aforesaid, and 19 is a tooth or projection on the extension 12 of the harp or frame adapted to engage said recess or indentation to lock the parts in place against accidental movement.
2O is the usual secondary controlling-valve commonly used on the present type of vaporlamps.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a vapor-lamp, of a supply-tank and a vaporizer permanently attached together, a harp or frame supporting a burner and comprising` a supporting-arm and a com mingling-passage, and a detachable connection between the combined tank and vaporizer and the lamp-frame consisting of a horizontally-arranged socket on the one part and a horizontal member on the other part adapted to engage said socket in a horizontal di-rection, and means for preventinga turning movement of either of said parts independent of the other, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a vapor-lamp, of a supply-tank and a vaporizer permanently attached together, a harp or frame supporting a burner and comprising a supporting-arm and a commingling-passage, and a detachable connection between the combined tank and vaporizer and the lamp-frame consisting of a vertical extension on the lamp-frame having a horizontal socket and side or cheek plates, and an intermediate connection between the supply-tank and the vaporizer having a noncircular portion adapted to engage between said cheek-plates in a horizontal direction, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 21st day of September, 1001.
GEORGE BOI-INEE.
