I PAT NT OFFICE.
v MACHINE FOR FORMING CAN-BODIES,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 730,039, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed July 1'7, 1901. Serial No. 68,620- (No model) T on whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, JAMES MOGINNIs, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented oertain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Forming Can-Bodies; and I d'ohere by declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for forming can-bodies and like ar ticles made of sheet metal.
It provides for bending or shaping the previously-prepared blank and for interlocking the meeting or engaging longitudinal edges thereof, as in forming the side seam. I
The nature and characteristics of the invention consist of sundry combinations and arrangements of parts including their c011- struction, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention,- Figure 1 is a partly sectional and a partly side elevation thereof, other parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation, partly in section, as indicated by broken line o: m in 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken 'on the line a a of Fig. 2, parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in sec I tion, as indicated by broken line y 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view disclosing more fully the can-body-blank-manipulating device or former engaging said blank. Fig. 4: is a detailed section, partly broken away, showing more particularly the cam mechanism in part for actuating the can-body-blank former, for supporting the canbody-blank horn, for actuating the hammer, and for centering the can-body blank. Fig. 5 is a crosssection taken through Fig. 1 on the line 1 1. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 2 2 of the same figure.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed or varied at will without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected.
In carrying out my invention I arrange the.
principal parts of the machine upon a suitable casting or framing 1. An endless belt or carrier 2 encompasses, preferably, sprocketwheels 3 3, suitably hung below the upper horizontal part of said framing, at the rear. and
forward ends thereof, a table 4 being arranged upon said horizontal part of said framing, with its center adapted to permit the passage therethrough of said belt flush with its lateral portion. horizontally and laterally adjustable gages or guides 5 for the feeding of the blank of the article to be formed. Said carrier or belt is equipped at suitable intervals apart with lateral angular arms 2, extending upward beyond the table 4 in the forward movement of the belt, to engage and carry forward the can-body blank before and after having been bent around the horn, as will presentlymore fully appear. Said arms have their inturned or angular upperends entering and guided in corresponding lateral grooves or channels 6, formed in the cylinder or horn 6. Said carrier has one of its sprocket-wheels provided with a ratchet 2 and with said ratchet Said table is provided with engages'a spring-pressed pawl 2,carried by a rock-lever 2, hung on the shaft of said sprocket-wheels and actuated to impart an intermittent feeding motion to said carrier, as required in operating upon the can-body blank from start to finish in forming said body. The lever 2 itself is actuated by a cam -2,-secured upon a shaft 2 and by a connecting-rod 2 connected to one end of said rock-lever and to a metal strap 2, embracing said cam, said shaft being driven by gearing, &c., as hereinafter disclosed.
- A cylinder or horn 6 issuitably secured in the horizontal part of the framing 1 in a plane just above and centrally'of the table 4 and extending fromthe forward end of said table suitably forward. The rear-end portion of said horn is of less diameter, as at 6, than its remaining portion, and said less-diametered portion is somewhat flattened, as at 6 to permit the depression of one side edge of the can-body blank below the meeting or opposite side edge of said can-body blank at that point by the corresponding action of one jaw of the can-body former, presently 'described, to permit said side edges to pass or lap by one another sufiiciently to allow their previously-formed hooked portions to be interlocked. After said side edges of the canbody blank have been interlocked, thus initially forming the can-body, said can body will spring back into its normal contour and be permitted to be passed or carried onto and along the other or greater-diametered portion of said horn, as more fully disclosed hereinafter. Said greater-diametered portion of the horn or cylinder 6 has extending throughout its length in its upper surface a longitudinal slot (5, as required in forming the lateral seam of the can-body or other article. Just in the rear of this horn is arranged the fiuXing or rosining device. This comprises suitable receptacles 7 for holding the flux, arranged in a plane just above the line of travel of the blank-carrier and each having tubular connection, as at 7, with a horizontal laterally-split tube 7 suitably secured in position and adapted to receive and permit the passage of the lateral edge of the can-body blank through or within the slit or split thereof. The flux or rosin fed from the receptacles 7 down through the tubular connection 7 into the split tube '7" distributes itself evenly upon the can-body blank along or contiguously to its longitudinal edges preliminary to the application thereto of the solder,'the operation of which will be presently described The tubular connections 7 between the receptacles or holders 7 and the split tubes 7" may consist each of a longitudinal or horizontal tube centrally connected by a short tube to the bottom of said receptacle or holder and to said split tube by a series of similar short tubes '7, as shown. This provides for the predetermined distribution or delivery of the flux over an extended area in a rectilinear or straight-ahead direction and in the miniminn-restricted lateral limits, as desirable, to prevent the indiscriminate application of the flux, avoiding the liability thereof reaching the interior of the finally-formed can, which would taint or affect the contents thereof, as has heretofore been experienced.
Curved jaws or hooks 8, constituting the former for bending or curving the blank, as in forming the-can-bod y or like article, made of sheet metal, have their inner end portions 8 pivoted, as at S, to a cross-piece carried by the can-body-blank-centering device, presently described, at a suitable point below the born (3. Said inner end portions of said jaws stand at right angles to the general plane of the outer portions thereof, the outer curved arms thereof having connected thereto, by links 8, connecting-rods 8, suitably guided, as shown, and preferably equipped at their lower ends with bearing rolls or disks S the purpose of which will presently appear. Le-
, vers S", suitably pivoted at their rear ends for convenience upon the shaft 2", before described, engage the rolls or bearings 8 to reduce frictional contact between the engaging parts and intermittently actuate or lift the connecting-rods 8 by the action of the elliptical cams 8 for imparting the requisite movement to the jaws or hooks 8 to effect the bending or curving of the can-body blank. Springs 8, having their lower ends secured to the base and their other ends connected to the rods 0, serve to automatically separate the jaws 8 after having compassed the blank in conducting the operation. of forming the can-body. Said cams 8 are suitably secured to the shaft 8", hung in the framing 1 and preferably engage rolls or bearings 8, hung in the levers 8", to also reduce frictional contact between the engaging parts. Said levers 8 may be equipped with steel wear plates or blocks 8 suitably held in place therein by set-screws or otherwise permitting their removal when necessary. The left-hand jaw 8, acting upon that side edge of the can-body blank overlapping the opposite side edge of said blank, which edges have been previously curved or hooked, forces said edges together down in the space provided by reducing the born 6, as at (5", the underlapp'ing edge eontacting with the bottom of said reduction. Thus the edges of said can-body blank are interlocked and yet are permitted to conform to the outline or circumference of the now initially-formed can-body by the recoil-sprin action of the metal for subsequent treatment by the hammer, next described.
A hammer 9, suitably arranged between and in lateral guideways 9, secured in the framing 1, is carried by a cross-bar 0", secured to its upper end, and to said cross-bar are connected connecting-rods 0, suitably guided, as shown, and strapped, as at 9, at their lower ends to cranks 9 of the shaft S, previously referred to, to actuate said hammer intermittently. Said hammer has its lower end provided with a reduced face portion 9 adapted to pass into the groove (5 of the born 6 and to engage and act with precision upon the lapped edges of the can-body blank, and thus hammer or clamp them firmly or compactly together, as in forming the lateral seam of the can-body preliminary to the application of the solder, as described further on, said hammer, as will be observed, being actuated by the cranks aforesaid, and thus caused to deliver its blow intermittently .in keeping with the corresponding movement of the blank.
A centering rod or device 10, extending at its upper end through and carrying a crosspiece 10 to which, as above stated, the canbody former is connected, has its lower end preferably provided or equipped with a frictional roll or disk 10, for the like purpose as stated in connection with the like rolls before described, and its upper end arranged to engage the can-body blank at intervals and center it, as when the can-body blank is being bent into form, 850. such engagement of said rod or device with the can-body blank and yet not interfere To provide for IIC with the feeding of the blank, a lever 10 is for convenience pivoted at one end upon the shaft 2 as in the case of the corresponding levers 8, above described, and adapted to engage said roll or bearing 10 and itself to be intermitently actuated by the cam 10, carried by the shaft 8 andengaging a roll or disk 10, carried by said lever at its center. This lever is also equipped with a wearing steel block or plate 10, interposed between itself and the roll or bearing 10 at the lower end of the rod 10. To provide for supporting the forward end of the horn 6 when the blank is being operated upon, I provide a similar rod or support 11, with its upper end adapted to contact with said horn and to be intermittently disengaged from said blank to permit the intermittent feeding of the blank, as above pointed out.
The intermittent disengagement of said rod from said horn or blank is effected by means of a cam 11, also secured on the shaft 2 and engaging a frictional roll 11 at the lower end of rod 11.
The shafts 2 and 8, above described, are preferably driven by intergeared cog-wheels or pinions 12 13 14 and a pulley 15, belted to a suitable motor or driving power, the pinions 12 and 13 being secured to said shafts and the pinion 14c and pulley 15 being carried by a common shaft 16, suitably fixed upon the framing 1. The shafts 2 and 8' are thus geared up to impart and predetermine the required intermittent stroke or action through their cams to the above-named operative parts as relates to the fluxing and blankbending operations, other gear andbelt mechanism being connected up therewith to actuate a solder delivering or feeding contrivance or device which may be used in practice with my machine, the housing and connections for which are disclosed inqFig. 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a carrier adapted to carry the blank and a fluXing or rosining device comprising opposite split tubes having slits or slots in opposite sides adapted to receive the lateral edge portions of said blank, substantially as set forth. 7
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a blank-carrier, a fluxing device comprising opposite split tubes adapted to receive the lateral edges of the blank,
receptacles or holders, and parallel longitudi i nal tubes having short tubular connections with said split tubes and a horn or cylinder around which said blank is bent, said carrier being equipped with means for-aiding the carrying of said blank forward to said horn, substantially as set forth.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination of the blank-carrier equipped with lateral arms, a fiuxing device comprising opposite split tubes adapted to receive the lateral edges of the blank, receptacles orholders, and parallel longitudinal tubes having I short tubular connections with said split tubes, and a horn or cylinder having opposite longitudinal grooves adapted to receive said lateral arms, substantially as set forth.
4. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a blank-carrier equipped with lateral arms, a fluxin g device comprising 7 5 opposite split tubes adapted to receive the lateral edges of the blank, receptacles or holders and parallel longitudinal tubes having short tubular connections with said split tubes, a horn or cylinder having opposite longitudinal grooves adapted to receive said lateral arms, a former adapted to conform said blank to said horn and means for actuating said former, substantially as set forth.
5. In a machine of the character described,- the combination of'a blank-carrier equipped with blank-carrying arms, a fluxing device comprising opposite split tubes adapted to receive the lateral edges of the blank, receptacles or holders, and parallel longitudinal o tubes having short tubular connections with said split tubes, a horn or cylinder having opposite longitudinal grooves adapted to receive said arms, and a centering device adapted to alternately engage or contact with the blank 9 5 when bent around said horn, and carrying a former adapted to bend said blank upon said horn, substantially as set forth. a
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a blank-carrier equipped with blank-carrying arms, a fluxing device comprising opposite split tubes adapted to receive the lateral edges of the blank,'receptacles or holders and parallel longitudinal tubes having short tubular connections with said split tubes, a horn or cylinder having opposite longitudinal grooves adapted to receive said arms, a centering device adapted to alternately contact with said blank when bent around said horn and carrying a former I 10 adapted to bend said blank upon said horn, and means forhammering the blank at its seam, substantially as set forth.
