Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. IRISH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, Essex county, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llangers or Supports for Pipes or other Articles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hangers or supports for pipes or similar articles.

The object of my invention is to provide such a hanger that will serve for readily and quickly attaching a pipe or similar article to a fixed support, particularly to iron girders or beams, whereby the pipes-as, for example, gas-pipes-can be suspended under or along said beams or elsewhere and firmly held in place.

My invention consists of the devices and combination of devices herein described.

Figure 1 illustrates my invention as applied to the lower edge of a T-beam or iron girder, showing said beam in edge view, and the bracket also being shown in edge view. Fig. 2 illustrates the beam or girder in crosssection and showing the parts as they will appear when looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1. Fig. illustrates a plan view of the bracket or hanger with the attached bolt shown in cross-section, a pipe shown suspended from said hanger, and the other parts and devices being broken away. Fig. 4 illustrates an inside plan of one member of the bracket or hanger.

l is a horizontal T-beam or girder having the two opposite extending arms 2 3 and a are two opposing jaws constructed to slide upon each other and be securely adjusted by means of a screw-bolt 5 and nut 6, said bolt passing through slots 7 in the shanks of said jaws and, as shown in Figs. 1 and 9, with the jaws grasping the opposite edges of the two arms 2 2 of the girder. I

The bracket or hanger is composed of two similar members 8, each having a spanning portion 9 (shown semicircular in the drawings) and a shank portion 10. This shank portion is provided with a transverse slot 11, extending from a point about half way between said edges to one of said edges, so that slots 11 of said two members will be at the opposite edges of the hanger, as shown in Fig. 3, and a bolt, such as 5, can then be held in the slots 11 of both of the members, and the inner ends of both slots forming the contaming-walls for said bolt. If it be desired to support and hold up the pipe, such as 14:, one of the memberssay the upper one-can be slid by means of its slot 11 over the depending screw-bolt 5 and with the spanning portion!) encirclingthe upper part of said pipe. Then the opposite or lower member 8 is slid from the opposite side of the said bolt, so

that the bolt will enter the slot 11 and with the spanning portion 9 encircling the lower part of the pipe. A nut 15 can then be screwed onto the bolt 5 tightly up against the lower edge of the shank of the lower member 8, and the pipe will then be held into place and be firmly suspended from the two jaws 3 and at and the girder 1. As will be seen in Fig. 2, the ribs and depressions of the shanks of the two members 8 will serve to prevent transverse movement of the two members when they are tightened into place bythe nut 15; It will also be seen that both members of the hangers or bracket may be made precisely alike and cast from the same mold, for when the two members are placed together in operative position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and with the ribbed and depressed faces of the shanks 1O resting upon each other the ribs and recesses of one member will engage 'withthe corresponding recess and ribs of the other member, and, as before stated, the opening of the slot of one member will be on the opposite side of the hanger from. the opening of the slot of the other member, as will be seen in Fig. 3.

From the above it will be seen that my inveution provides a very simple and efficient means for readily and quickly attaching a pipe or similar article to a fixed support.

It will of course be evident that the spanning portion of the members 8 need not be semicircular, as shown in the drawings, but may be of any form desired, so that'they will properly support the article that it is desired to support.

I do notlimit myself to the precise construction shown and described, as many changes may be made Without departing from the principles of my invention or sacrificing its chief advantages.

lrVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Ahanger orbracket for supporting pipes or similar articles, consisting of two members, each provided with a spanning portion and a' shank, and a transverse slot in said shank, and both members constructed to span said pipe or other article with the transverse slots substantially parallel to the axis of the same, and to be detachably secured together and to a fixed support by a screw-bolt passing from said support through said slots.

2. A hanger orbracket for supporting pipes or similar articles, consisting of two members, each provided with a spanning portion and a shank, and a transverse slot in said shank extending to one edge of the same, and both members constructed to span said pipe or other article, with the transverse slots substantially parallel to the axis of the same, and to be detachably secured together and to a fixed support by a screw-bolt passing from said support through said slots.

3. A hanger or bracket for supporting pipes or similar articles, consisting of two members, each provided with a spanning portion and a shank, and a transverse slot in said shank extending to one edge of the same, and both members constructed to span said pipe or other article, with the transverse slots substantially parallel to the axis of the same, and to be detachably secured together and to a fixed support by a screw-bolt passing from said support through said slots, and when the members are arranged to span the pipe or other article, the inner ends of the slot being on opposite sides of the bolt.

A hanger or bracket for supporting pipes or similar articles, consisting of two members each being a duplicate of the other, and provided with a spanning portion and a shank, and a transverse slot in said shank extending to one edge of the same, and both members constructed to span the pipe or other article, with the transverse slots substantially parallel to the axis of the same, and to be detachably secured together and to a fixed support by a screw-bolt passing from said support through said slot, and with the inner ends of the slots on opposite sides of said bolt.

5. A hanger or bracket for supporting pipes or similararticles, consistingof two members, each provided with a spanning portion and a shank, and both members constructed to span said pipe or other article, with the transverse slots substantially parallel to the axis of the same, and to be detachably secured together and to a fixed support by a screw-bolt passing from said support through holes in said shanks, and the inner surfaces of said shanks being provided with longitudinal ribs and corresponding depressions, whereby the shanks of the two members may engage with each other, and be locked in any desired position from transverse movement.

6. A hanger or bracket for supporting pipes or similar articles, consisting of two members, each provided with a spanning portion and a shank, and a transverse slot in said shank, and both members constructed to span said pipe or other article, with the transverse slots substantially parallel to the axis of the same, and to be detachably and adjustably secured together and to a fixed support by a screwbolt passing from said support through said slots, and the inner surfaces of said shanks being provided with longitudinal ribs and corresponding depressions, whereby the shanks of the two members may engage with each other, and be locked in any desired position from transverse movement.

'7. The improved means for attaching a pipe or similar article to a beam or similar fixed support, consisting of two jaws constructed to slide and be adjusted upon each other, and to grasp the opposite edges of said support, in combination with a hanger or bracket consisting of two members each provided with a spanning portion, and both members constructed to span the pipe or other article, with the transverse slots substantially parallel to the axis of the same, and to be detachably secured together and to said jaws, by a bolt passing from said jaws through holes in said bracket.

A hanger or bracket for supporting pipes or similar articles, consisting of two members, each provided with a spanning portion and a shank, and a transverse slot open at one end in said shank, and both members constructed to span said pipe or other article, with the transverse slots substantially parallel to the axis of the same, and to be detachably secured together and to a fixed support by a screwbolt passing from said support through said slots. 1
