Description
PATENTED SEPT. 1, 1903.
N. D. ASDELL.
NUT LOOK APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 13, 1903.
A TTOIPNEYS.
latented September 1, 1903.
UNlTED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON DEAN ASDELIQOF LAKEVIEVV, OREGON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO O'RIN F. DEMOREST, OF LAKEVIEW', OREGON.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,893, dated September 1, 1903.
Application filed June 13|1903. Serial No. 161,292. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
file it known that I, NELSON DEAN ASDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakevicw, in the county of Lake and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to nut-locks, and has for its object to provide new and improved means for securely looking a nut to a bolt at any desired point thereon.
It consists of novel and improved means, employing a wedge seated in the nut and adapted for engagement with the bolt-thread,
: a key whereby the wedge is forced into looking position, special means for securing the key, and a nut of peculiar construction, all as will hereinafter be fully described and the novel features pointed out in the subjoined' claims.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe it in detail, with reference to the accompanyin g drawings, which form apart of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 00 m of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is avertical sectional view 3o taken on line y y of 2.
In the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote like parts, A designates abolt, and a screw-threads thereon.
In practicing my invention Iemploy a nut I of any desired form. \Vithin the nut and near its threaded bolt-hole B, I form a recess 0, having a wedge-shaped extension 0, providing open communication with the bolt-hole 13, as shown. It will be noticed that the recess C extends part way only through the nut from its face or outer side and that the recess with its wedge'shaped extension is disposed parallel with the threaded bolt-hole in the nut. l) designates an opening passing transversely through from one to the next adj oining side of the nut and with its passage-way opening into the recess 0. In the extension 0 of the recess 0, I arrange a wedge E, adapted to be forced into engagement with the screw-threads on the bolt A by driving a suit- 0 able key F, having a rounded lower end F (see Fig. 3,) into the recess 0. The lower end of the key F is cut away, as at F, adapted when the key is driven home to be engaged by a rivet or bolt G, arranged in the opening D. The bolt G should be secured in place by swaging down its unheaded end, as shown, or by other suitable means.
The construction and use of my invention will be understood from the above description in connection with the several views of illustration in my drawings.
Obviously when it becomes necessary to remove the nut the swaged or headed end of the bolt must be removed, which can be quickly accomplished with a chisel and hammer. The projecting end of the key facilitates its removal by means of a pair of pliers, and the locking-wedge be forced back out of engagement with screw-threads on the bolt with a punch, nail, or other suitable device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. In a nut-lock, and in combination with 7 the bolt and its nut, means whereby the nut is secured against turning action, the said securing means consisting of a wedge seated in the nut, a key adapted to be driven into a recess in the nut, adjoining the wedge-seat, and operating to force the wedge into locking engagement with the bolt, and a transverse openin g through the nut adapted to receive a suitable bolt with the latter having locking engagement with the said key, substantially as described.
2. A nut-lock comprising, a nut, a bolt, and means whereby the nut is locked against turn ing on the bolt, the said locking means consisting of a recess in the nut having a side extension opening into bolt-hole of the nut, a wedge arranged in the said side extension, a key in the said recess operating upon being driven home, to force the said wedge into locking engagement with the said bolt, a transverse opening through the nut, adapted, to receive a bolt which, when in p1ace,h2ts locking transversely-arranged bolt, in the nut, having engagement With a suitable side recess in the locking engagement With the said key, sub- IO said key, substantially as described. stantially as described. 3. In a nut-lock employing a bo1t,a, nut,and 5 a locking-Wedge in the nut, in combination NELEON DEAN ASDELI" therewith, a key arranged in the nut and op- WVitnesses: erating upon being driven home to force the WV. J. MOORE,
said Wedge into locking engagement, and a O. F. DEMOREST.
