WATER-GAGE VALVE.
SFEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,104, dated August 4;, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN C. F. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Gage Valves, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in water-gage valves, and more particularly to that class of valves known in the art as gagecocks, whereby the gage-glass is secured and connected with the boiler by said valves.
The object of this invention is to provide means whereby should the gage-glass become accidentally broken or displaced the steam and water are prevented from flowing from the boiler, thereby preventing serious loss of property and life.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of one end of the boiler, showing my improved water gage valves applied thereto with the gage-glass in Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section, of either the lower or upper gage-cock; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of a portion of the cock, showing a modified form of construction.
In carrying out my invention I provide'a valve-body 1, which has the threaded connection 2, adapted to be screwed into the boiler at a suitable point. A neck portion 3 is also formed integral with the valve-body 1, and an enlarged web I is formed on the body,through which the port 5 passes. This port 5 communicates at its inlet end with the port 6, and its other end connects with a chamber 7, formed in the neck 3 of the valve. The outer end of the neck is screw-threaded, and a cap 8, carrying the stuffing-box 9, is fitted thereto.
A valve-stem 10, having a suitable handle 11, passes through the stuffing-box 9 and cap 8, and on its end which extends into the valve-casing is provided with the enlarged ring 12, over which a cap 14 fits. The inner end of this cap 14 is screw-threaded and receives the threaded portion 15 of the valve 16, which also has winged guides 17, which fit in the aperture 18, formed within the valve-seat 19, and communicates with the chamber 20, formed in the body of the valve. The chamber 20 is separated from the chamber 6 by the wall 21; but said chamber 20 connects with the gage-glass, which is held in position and kept tight by the usual stuifing-gland 22.
It will be noted by reference to Fig. i that the upper and lower gage-cock must be right and left in order that the handles of each may be on the same side and also that a drainplug 23 is provided on the lower cock.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the valve-stem as sliding through the stuffing-box; but Fig. 3 shows the same as threaded and adapted to be moved as an ordinary valve.
The operation of my device is as follows: The steam or water entering the port 6 passes through the port 5 and into the chamber 7, and the pressure being equalized on each side of the valve 16 the same will stay in its normal or partly-open position; but should the gage-glass be broken the water or steam rushing through the valve proportional to the pressure would by its velocity carry the valve 16 to its seat, due to the lost motion of the connection between the same and the Valve-stem, due to the thimble 14 moving over the collar 12, formed on the valve-stem 10. After proper repairs have been made the valve-stem is pulled out to its full extent and then partially pushed back, when the parts will bein the position shown in Fig. 2 and ready to again automatically operate when occasion requires.
While I have described my invention in detail, various slight changes may be made in the same Without departing from the gen= eral spirit thereof.
