PRESSER-FOOT HOLDER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that l, PHILIP DIEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser-Foot Holders for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to that class of attachment-holders comprising a socket-piece constructed with means for securing it to the lower end of a sewing-machine presser-foot and means for fastening the shank of the attachment detachably to said socket-piece;

and it has for its object toprovide a device of this character which is simple in construction, efiective in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture, while accommodating an attachment having a shank which may be readily struck up from sheet metal.

The invention consists, primarily, in the provision of the socket-piece, with a longitudinal presser-bar-receiving socket entered by the lower end of the Presser-bar and a longitudinal external channel having parallel edge walls, to which is fitted the correspondinglyshaped shank of the presser-foot, which has in its upperend portion an open-ended longitudinal slot embracing the shank of a clampscrew fitted to and entering a transverse threaded hole in the socket-piece beneath the end of the presser-bar socket.

It also includes a particular arrangement of the presser-bar socket and the channel for the presser-foot shank, whereby the end of the presser-bar forms a stop to determine the vertical position of the presser-foot shank, and hence of the presser-foot, and in a special device for fastening the socket-piece upon the presser-bar.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a rear elevation, of the lower end of the presser -bar of a sewing-machine having an attachment-holder embodyshank of a presser-foot. The socket-piece a is constructed with a central longitudinal socket Z), extending only partially through the same and terminating in an abrupt shoulder, which may serve as a stop for the lower end of the presser-bar c, entering said socket and secured thereto by means of the headed fastening-screw (l, having a threaded shank slightly longer than the diameter of the presser-bar and entering a transverse threaded hole extending entirely through the latter, the preferably cylindrical head of such screw being received in a transverse hole 6 in the socket-piece, so that the jamming of the end of the screw-shank upon the inner wall of the socket will not only prevent the accidental loosening of the screw in the continued operation of the sewing-machine, but will serve to bind the parts together and take up any lost motion between them. The lower end of the socket-piece is provided with a shallow longitudinal channel f of rectangular shape, formed by the ribs or flc nges g, offering parallel edge walls disposed at a right angle to the bottom of such channel, of which the rear or outer face isentirely open, as is the lower end, the upper end portion intersecting the lower portion of the socket b.

The shank 7b of the presser-foot is formed with parallel edges and fitted to the channel f, an open-ended slot 2' being provided in its upper portion parallel with the edges, through which passes the shank of a clamp-screwy, entering a transverse threaded hole in the socket-piece beneath the socket Z), which hole intersects the channel f and registers with the slot '1', the foot being adapted to be secured in position with the end of its shank preferably seated against the lower end of the presserbar by the engagement of its head with the outer or rear face thereof.

The provision of the channel with parallel edge walls and the use of a simple clampscrew embraced by the slot of the presser-foot shank afford a convenient means of application and withdrawal of the foot, the shank of the latter being applied from behind the presser-bar and slipped up into its place in the channel f intermediate the bottom of the latter and the head of the clamp-screw.

By disposing the clamp-screwj beyond the end of the presser-bar socket it will be seen that sufficient stock may be provided in the portion of the socket-piece which it enters to afford ample bearing for its threaded shank, so as to insure against its jarring loose by continued use of the machine. This is equally true of the fastening-screw (1, which has a bearing equal in length to the full thickness of the presser-bar while the straight cylindrical form of the hole 6, provided in the socket-piece to admit such screw, permits the outer end of the screw to be set below the surface of the part a without the use of a countersinking-tool in forming the same, the use of which expedient renders such part easier to construct and also insures a more effective fastening than those heretofore employed for such parts.

Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. The combination with a sewing-machine presser-bar, of a socket-piece having in one end a longitudinal socket extending only partially through the same having a shoulder therein and fitted to said presser-bar, and at the other end anexternal longitudinalehannel formed with parallel edges each at a right angle to the bottom of said channel and intersected by a threaded transverse hole in said socket-piece disposed beyond the end of said socket, means for securing said socketpieee upon said presser-bar, a presser-foot having a fiat rectangular shank fitted to said external channel of the socket-piece and provided in its upper end with an open-ended slot registering with said transverse threaded hole, and a headed clamp screw inserted through the slotted shank of said presser-foot into the threaded hole of said socket-piece.

2. The combination with a sewing-machine presser-bar, of the socket-piece a having at one end the longitudinal socket l) terminating at the inner end in a shoulder adapted to engage the lower end of said presser-bar to which said socket is fitted said socket-piece being provided at its other end with the external longitudinal channel f, with parallel edges each at a right angle to the bottom of said channel and intersecting the inner end portion of said socket beneath which said socket piece is formed with a transverse threaded hole, means for securing said socketpiece upon the presser-bar, the presser-foot having its fiat shank h with slot 1' fitted to said external channel and having its upper end in engagement with the lower end of said Presser-bar and the clamp-screw j for securing said presser-foot in said socket-piece.
