UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. DOVER, OF CRANSTON, RHODE ISLAND.
GEM-SETTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 722,824, dated March 17, 1903.
Application filed September 17, 1902. Serial No. 123,672. (No model.) 7
T0 aZZ whom it may cancer-7w Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DOVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oranston, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gem-Settings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gemsettings, and has for its objects the ends commonly sought in such devices; but more particularly it is designed to overcome the common tendency of the prongs to radially expand and release the gem. This is sure to occur when any unusual blow or pressure upon the top of the gem occurs.
To attain the ends sought, my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts'hereinafter set forth in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of my new radial support for the prongs of a setting; Fig. 2, a transverse central section of a setting en gaged by the support; Fig. 3, a plan of the unfolded setting planchet or blank; Fig. 4, a top plan View of the same bent into position for receiving the radial support, and Fig. 5 a side elevation of the completed setting.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views.
My setting is formed by striking or cutting from a sheet of metal a planchet consisting of a body a, with radial arms 79, provided with shoulders c and terminating in points 61, as shown in Fig. 3. The radial arms are upwardly bent, and the lateral shoulders c are inwardly folded into parallel planes, as indicated in Fig. 4.
I provide an anchor, brace, or support for the points d, similar to that shown in Fig. 1.
. It consists of a planchet- 13, comprising radial arms 6, corresponding in number with the prongs of the setting sought to be anchored. The ends f of the arms are preferably enlarged, especially when it is sought to augment the beauty of the completed setting by ornamenting that portion of the end f which projects beyond the edge of the setting. These ends are each provided with a slot g. The support-B is placed over the setting member, (shown in Fig. 4,) so that the points d of the latter traverse the openings g, and the endsf of the radial arms e rest upon the shoulders c of the setting A. The gem O is then placed upon the support B, Fig. 2, and the points (I are inwardly bent to grip the gem.
It is evident that any blow or pressure upon the gem will have absolutely no eifect upon the prongs b of the setting; further,
that by varying the shape of the tipf of the support B and ornamenting the upper portion of the same in any desired manner or by providing an extension of the same with radial prongs to hold auxiliary settings the beauty of my setting may be greatly enhanced.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a gem-setting the combination with the setting-prongs of a gem mounted in the prongs, a brace comprising radial arms joining the setting-prongs and means upon the ends of the radial arms for engaging the prongs.
2. In a gem-setting the combination with the setting-prongs provided with shoulders, of points above the shoulders, a planchet provided with slots resting upon the shoulders and traversed by the points, and a gem embraced by said points, and resting upon the planchet.
3. In a gem-setting the combination with the setting-prongs, of a brace comprising radial arms joining the setting-prongs, and means upon the ends of the radial arms for engaging the prongs.
4:. In a gem-setting the combination with the setting-prongs provided with shoulders, of a planchet provided with slots resting upon the shoulders and engaging the prongs.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. DOVER.
Witnesses:
HORATIO E. BELLows, ZENNER JACKSON.
