Letters Patent No. 72,67 9, dated December 24, 1867'.v i
IMPROVED RAILWAY-CARRIAGE. I s
ein ilgemle -rrfrmt tu ir iter: @anni ignari :mr mating ont if tige time.
TO ALL PERSONS T0 WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME;
Be it known `that I, BELLVILLE L. RANDALL, of Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and 1iseful Improvement in Railway-Carriages and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which-f- Figure 1 is top view,and l Figure 2 a side elevation of the platform and wheels of a carriage, providedy with my invention.
In carrying out my said invention, I have combined with the truck-frame or the body of the carriage, and each of its wheels, offender, to extend about each wheel, o'r down in front and in rear of the tread thereof', in order to prevent a person from becoming accidentally caught between the wheel and the rail, and injured by them.l I have also supported the body or platform of the carriage on the wheel-bearings or boxes, or the truckframe carrying ,the same, by means of novel combination or arrangement of springs and levers, whereby the downward pressure of the carriage-body and its load is employed to prevent the platform from becoming sagged or bent down at or near either ofits ends.
. In the drawings, A denotes the'platform o r base-frame of a railway-carriage body, B is the truck-frame, i having the wheel journal-bearings or housing a a, connected with it in the ordinary manner. C C are the wheels. From each housing, the fender D extends horizontally in opposite directions alongside of the wheel,
and embraces the tread or circumference of the wheel on opposite sides, and thence projects downward in front and rear of the wheel, the same being as exhibited in the drawings. The platform is supported on the truck-frame by two levers E F, and three springs, G H I, aranged together, and extended from each of the housings of the wheel-journals, in manner as shown in iig. 2, the longer of the two levers having its fulcrum suspended from the platform, as represented at K. The two levers E F, and tpe single spring I, may be employed without the addition of either or both the springs G. H, but I prefer to use the said auxiliary springs, as, by so doing, theh distribution 'of the weight on the springs is made-to much better advantage, and with less liability of injury to them. The two levers, by their conjoint action, tend to elevilte or curve the platform upward at its ends, and thus prevent the sagging or bending of it, which results or is apt to follow when a single lever is used over such 'wheel-bearing, and so applied at its outer arm, toa spring placed on or within the platform, as to pull downward the spring when contracting it. l
Having thu's described my invention, what I claim is as follows 1. I claim the combina-tion as well as the arrangement of the levers E F and the springs I with the platform i and truck-frame. 2. I also claim the combination as well as the arrangement ofthe levers E F, the .springs I, and the springs G, with the platform and truck-frame. v
3. I also claim, thocombination as well as the arrangement of the levers E F, the springs I, and the springs H, withithe platform and truck-frame.
4. I also claim the combination as well as the arrangement of the levers E Fand the springs I G H, lwith the platform and the truck-frame.
BELLVILLE L. RANDALL.
