Beit known that I, EDWARD B. KING-MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and following is a l provide a comb of this class with simple and efficient means for more securely fastening the same in the hair. To this end the teeth of a comb constructed according to this invention are provided with locking projections or fastenings, which coperate to form tapering throatways between the teeth, while at the same time the barbs or projections of the teeth are so located as to form these tapering throatways without undercutting the combteeth or lessening the strength thereof.

To these ends this invention consists of the comb and of the combination of parts therein, as hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this speciication.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of a comb constructed according to this invention, and Fig. 2 is an Yenlarged perspective View of one of the comb-teeth.

In a comb constructed according to my invention each of the comb-teeth is preferably of the ordinary tapering shape, except that it is provided on opposite sides with projections or barbs. The projections or barbs on opposite sides of the tooth are arranged one above the other, so that the barb on one side of a tooth will coperate with a plain vertical face of an adjacent tooth, and the tooth will have a plain surface cooperating with the oppositely-projecting barb of said adjacent tooth, so that two tapering throatways will be provided between each pair of teeth for locking the comb into the hair of the user. At

the same time the strength of the individual comb-teeth will not be impaired and the teeth will not be undercut or in any way weakened at their upper ends nor where they join the body portion of the comb.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a detail description of a comb constructed according to my invention, 10 designates the curved body portion or crownwhich may be provided with a corrugated or otherwise ornamented upper edge 11. The end teeth 12 are larger than the'other comb-teeth, as is usual, and each of the end teeth is provided with a single inwardly-facing barb or projection 1-3. Each of the'intermediate comb-teeth 14, as illustrated most clearly in Fig. 2, is provided with an upper barb or projection l5 and a lower barb or projection 16, extending at a lower point from the opposite side of the tooth. By means of this construction it will be seenthat I have preserved substantially the ordinary tapered shape of the comb-teeth, and without weakening or otherwise cutting away said teeth I have provided two tapering throatways between each adjacent pair of teeth, which will tend to secure the comb in place in the hair of the user.

I am aware that changes maybe made in practicing my invention by those who are skilled in the art without departing from the scope thereof as expressed in the claims. For example, the barbs or projections 15 and 16 may be made in the form of rounded bosses instead of being of the pointed or angular construction illustrated.

My invention is also applicable to combs of widely differing designs and shapes. For example, in the present instance I have illustrated my invention as applied to a back comb; but it is also equally applicable to side combs or to combs of still other shapes. I do not wish, therefore, to be limited to the construction I have herein shown and described; .but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

l. As an article of manufacture, a hair-retaining comb comprising a crown or body portion with teeth extending therefrom, each of said teeth having an upper projection extending from one side to'coperate with a straight section of an adjacent tooth, and a lower projection extending from its opposite side to cooperate with a straight section of the other tooth adjacent thereto, so that two tapering throatways will be formed between each of the comb-teeth.
