HUGH S. KERR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PENDENT ()RNAMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,698, dated April 28, 1903.
Application filed November 5, 1902. Serial No. 130,173. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH S. KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Pendent Ornaments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ornamental pendentstructures of the character described in my prior patent, No. 618,275, dated January 24, 1899; and it consists in certain improvements in structures of this character whereby I am enabled to decrease the amount of material employed and enhance the character and beauty of the ornament.
My invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fullyassembled pendent ornament made in accordancewith myinvention. Fig.2isaperspective view of the assembled blanks from which this ornamentis made. Fig. 3 is a perspective view representing another form of blank. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic sectional View of the ornament shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar sectional view illustrating a modified form of the ornament, and Figs. 6 and 7 are views illustrating details of my invention.
In my former patent the ornaments or other structures were made up of a series of diamond-shaped figures all secured together at one end and arranged to be bent at certain points to form the ornamental structure, and when so shaped up they were sewed or otherwise fastened togetherin order to retain said shape. In the present form of ornament the blanks 1 are star-shaped, and they-may represent stars having any desirable number of points from three up. In the present instance I have shown these blanksl as representing [ivepointecl stars.
The points 2 are to be bent on the lines or and y into the desired form, and they may be held in position with the aid of a single fastener 3 of the kind usually employed for holdin 2 papers together. The blanks for forming the pendentornament of Fig. 1 are shown in Fig. 2, such sections being secured together by the staples 4, although other securing means may be employed, and having points 2 projecting from a central body 5, through which the fastening means are passed. In this view the corners of the points are perforated at 6 to receive the fastener 3. (Shown in Fig. 1.) The points of the star are bent first on the line 00, where they join the main body, and next on the line g, which latter portions form the top and bottom of the pend.- ent ornament, as shown in Fig. 1. To increase the ornamentation of this structure, I
providethe star-pointed streamers 7, which project from the center of the ornament, as shown in Fig. 1. These streamers may be made by laying a thin sheet of paper or other fabric between the two blanks, as shown in Fig. 4, or they may be independent sections and attached in any suitable manner to any portion of the ornament after it has been made up into form shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a blank structure which comprises a single complete star having the usual points 2, with a series of independent points 2 to be attached to said star in any suitable manner, the complete starblank forming one portion of the ornament, while the auxiliary points will be bent to form another portion of the ornament.
In Fig. 5 I have shown aform of the pendent ornament in which the top section is bent in toward the center of the structure and there held by the fastener 3. I may in some instances use a single blank, forming therefrom an ornament of the shape of one-half of that shown in Fig. 1.
The ends of each of the points are provided with an arrow-shaped ornamentation 8, which may be made by means of different colors placed directly upon these ends or by pasting difierent-colored paper over the same, and when these ends are brought together to form the top and bottom, as shown in Fig. 1, the form of a star will be outlined. The streamers 7 may also be provided with extensions 7, which may be folded to form bands 9 or pockets 10, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. These bands and pockets will only be carried by the streamer portions, which project from the center of the ornament; but these streamers may be made of heavier material, if desired such, for instance, as the cardboard from which the other part of the ornament is formedand when thus made the bands or pockets may serve to support other ornamental devices, which tend to enhance the beauty of the ornament.
The blank sections may be made in different colors and ornamented in any manner desirable, and they may be made in sheets suitably printed, so that the designs can be readily cut and the proper perforations made.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout- 1. A pendent ornament comprising starshaped sections having their projecting portions bent at one or more places and having the pointed ends of the same lapped and secured together to form a hollow structure.
2. A pendent ornament comprising a pair of star-shaped members suitably connected together, the projecting portions of said members being, bent at one or more places and having their bent ends lapped and secured together to form a hollow structure.
3. A pendent ornament comprising members having angular projecting portions arranged equidistantly, said projecting portions being bent at one or more places and having their pointed ends lapped and secured together to form a hollow structure.
at. A pendent ornament comprising members having angular projections of uniform size and shape, said projecting portions being bent at one or more places and having their pointed ends lapped and secured together to form a hollow structure.
5. A pendent ornament comprising members of suitable size and shape placedback to back and having projections, the projections of one section being bent at one or more places in one direction to form a portion of the ornament and the projections of the other section being bent at one or more points in the opposite direction to form the other portion of the ornament, the ends of said projections being secured together.
6. A pendent ornament comprising starshaped members fastened together at the center of the bodies of the same, the projecting parts of said members being bent at one or more places in opposite directions and having their ends secured together to form a hollow structure.
7. Apendentornamentcomprisingsections of material having angular projecting portions bent to form a hollow structure and having their ends lapped and secured together, and streamers secured to one of said sections and-depending from the points where said projecting portions join the body of the members.
8. Apendentornamentcomprisingsections of material having their bodies fastened together and having angular projecting portions bent at one or more places and having their points lapped and secured together to form a hollow structure, and streamers secured to one of said sections and depending from said ornament at the point of juncture between the sections.
9. A pendent ornament comprising starpointed sections bent to form a hollow body, the ends of said sections being so colored that when they are bent over to form the top of the body the representation of a star will be produced.
10. A pendent ornament comprising two star-shaped sections having their points bent and fastened together to form a hollow body, streamers projecting from the space between said sections, and independent foldable members carried by said streamers.
11. A pendent ornament comprising two star-shaped sections having their projecting ends bent and fastened together to form a hollow body, streamers projecting from the space between said sections, and pockets carried by said streamers.
12. A pendent ornament comprising a complete star-shaped section and independent sections attached to the same, the star-shaped section being bent in one direction and having the points of the same secured together and the independent sections being bent in the opposite direction and having their points secured together, the whole forming a hollow structure.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HUGH S. KERR.
