JoHN VADAM KINKELE, -or SACRAMENTO CITY; CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent No. 72,645, dated December 24, 1867 I IMPROVEMENT IN REVOLVING OVENS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, JOHN ADAM KNKELE, of Sacramento City, in the county of Sacramento, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ovens; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled iii the art to make and use the same; referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. v v
This invention relates to a new and improved method ot"constructing ovens for baking bread and other articles, and it consists principally in a revolving hearth or bottom, and in hot and cold-air lues in connection therewith, whereby much labor and fuel are saved, ns 4will'be hereinafter described.
' Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of the oven, showing' the parts of which it is conziposed, and the manner of their arrangement.
Figure 2 'is an outside view. i
Figure 3 is a. modification of the furnace or re-box, whereljy it is adapted to the burning of petroleum or other hydrocarbon liquids. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.'
The oven is placed upon mason-work, which may be continued up so as to surround or form the outside casing of the oven if desired.
A represents the foundation; A is the outside casing of the oven; B is an interior case, placed between the outer casing A and the wall of the oven; C is the wall of the oven; D represents the crown of the oven; E is the bottcm'or hearth ofthe oven, which is formed of tile or other suitable material, and which is supported by a gear-wheel, which is revolved around a central post or pivot, E; F is a plate, which extends under the ovenan'd lues, and which supports the wheel and hearth, by the pivot E; G represents the hot-air chamber; H is the hot-air flue, which surrounds the oven; H is a cold-air ilue, outside the lue H. aa indicate apertures, through the outside casing, for the admission-of cold air into the flue H. These two ilues, H and H, connect above the crown of the oven, forming the iue J, as secu in the drawing, and discharge through 'the pipe or chimney J. K isa shaft, which has a gear-wheel, L, upon its inner end, which engages with the gear-wheel which supports the hearth E, and by which the same is revolved. This revolving of the oven may be done by a crank,or in any other convenient manner. lM represents the furnace or irebox, with a grate, which adapts it for burning either wood or coal, and with an ash-pit beneath, as seen in the drawing. Fig. 8 represents a modification of the furnace, by which the oven may be heated by petroleum or other oils, showing the oil-vessel, and the'manner in which the ame is supplied with oxygen from currents of cold air. Above the furnace there is a. small boiler, marked o.A p is a pipe, which conveys steam from the boiler to the interior of thc oven for moistening the bread; the quantity of steam may be governed by the cock 7'. Within the oven a lamp may be placed, with a reflector for thepurpose of lighting the same. '.The chimney of the lamp may extend through the crown of the oven, and discharge into the iue above, as seen in the drawing. S S represent doors to the oven, and T doors to the outer casing.
It will be seen that the arrangement is such that the oven is entirely surrounded by the heated air, and, the v colder air in the outerilue being a good non-conductor, the heat around the oven is not radiated from the inner due. The temperature may be regulated by the admission of celda-ir through the apertures a c, as seen iu the drawing. l
In filling the oven, and in removing the contents therefrom, the hear-this revolved so as to accommodate the door, and, during the baking, it may be revolved occasionally so as to equalize the heat and change the position ot' the contents with regard to the {ire-box. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The oven, constructed as described, consisting of the' inner wall B, placed between the outer case A',
having cold-air openings a, and the oven C, all supported by an annular plate upon the fodndatiou A, the hot and cold annular air-chambers H H', communicating with the common ue J"; the reyolving hearth E of the oven, supported upon the plate E by a pivot,l and operated by means of the gear-wheel L, as herein described,
for the purpose specified.
2. The rotary hearth E, whenconstructed of ltile or tire-brick, in combination with the oven C, concentric wall B, and casing A", as herein described, for the purpose specified.
JOHN ADAM KINKELE.
