SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,986, dated April '7, 1903.
Application filed January 10 1903. Serial No. 138,552. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSH WOLF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomville, in the countyof Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Olevises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clevises; and the object of the same is to construct a simple and efficient lock for devices of this character as well as an improved form of clevis.
The novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification, aud illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my device locked. Fig. 2 is alike View of the same unlocked. Fig. 3 is a detail of the locking-lug and recess. Fig. 1 is a detail of a fragment of the clasp-bar and pintle.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The body of my clevis is an irregular U- shaped member comprising a straight side bar 1, a side bar 2, formed in a reverse curve, and a cross-bar 3, connecting said side bars. A knuckle 4 is formed on the end of the side bar 2 to accommodate a pintle 5, carried by one end of a clasp-bar 6, mounted to swing in the plane of the clevis and having an aperture 7 in its other end, which fits over the free end 8 of the side bar 1.- The end 8 is reduced to form shoulders 9, which engage the clasp and limit its movement. To look the clasp 6 in place, a transverse groove 10 is formed in the inner side of the side bar 1, and a latch-lever 11 is pivoted to the'clasp and has a short sector-shaped arm 12, which engages the groove 10, and a long arm 13, which bears a conical lug 14, which engages a conical recess 15, formed in the clasp. A
lug 16 is formed on the upper side of the arm 13 to serve as a thumb-piece for use in operating the lever to unlock the clevis. Suppose the clevis to bein the initial position shown in Fig. 1. The hinged clasp 6 then rests on the shoulders 9, the short sector-shaped arm 12 of the latch 11 then engages the groove 10, and the conical lug 14: engages the conical recess 15. To open the clevis, it is then necessary to place the thumb on the side of the lug 16 and push transversely the arm 13 to force the lug 14L to ride up and out of the recess 15, thereby releasing the latch-lever 11, which is then swung around until the sector 12 clears the groove 10. The-clasp is then free to be raised.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a clevis, the combination of a U-shaped member, a clasp hinged to the free end of one of the side bars of said member and hav-- ing an aperture therein fitting over the free end of the other side bar of said member, said last-mentioned side bar having a transverse groove therein, a latch-lever pivoted to said clasp-bar and engaging said groove, and a conical lug formed in said latch-lever and engaging a conical recess in said clasp-bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RUSH WOLF.
