SAMUEL A. GREGG, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI.
HOLDER FOR PEGS FOR STRINGED MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,396, dated October 14, 1902.
Application filed March 31. 1902. Serial No. 100,769. (No modelfi To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LSAMUEL A. GREGG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Holder for Pegs of Stringed Musical Instruments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for holding and regulating the friction of pegs for musical instrumentssuch, for instance, as violins, cellos, and the likeand the object is to provide a holding device that may be readily attached to a peg, that will not scratch or mar the varnish on the peg-box, and that will firmly hold the peg from turning or slipping under the strain of a string.
I will describe a holder for pegs of stringed musical instruments embodying my inven tion and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a peg-box and pegs, showing a holder embodying my invention as applied; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the string-pegs engaging in openings in the pegbox 2 in the usual manner. Having connection with each peg is the holding or tension device consisting of a helical spring 3, the coils of Which gradually increase in diameter, the inner or larger coil being arranged to engage against the surface of the pegbox. The outer coil passes around a screw or peg 4, engaged in the small end of the peg 1. To prevent possible turning of the holding-spring, it may have its inner end extended and engaged on the peg directly forward of it, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In applying this device it will be only necessary to make a hole in the small end of the peg and then after placing the springin position insert the screw, as indicated in Fig. 2. The spring obviously by drawing the tapered peg longitudinally will causeit to bind tightly in the opening in the walls of the peg-box, preventing accidental rotary movement of the pegs. As the wire forming the spring is round, it will not mar the varnish of the pegbox by its slight movement thereon, as might be the case with the edge of a spring-disk engaging with the peg-box.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a peg-box and a string-peg, of a holding device for the peg, consisting of a helical spring having coils of gradually-increased diameter from the outer to the inner end, the outer coil being secured to the peg and theinner coil engaging against the peg-box.
2. The combination with a peg-box and a peg, of a peg-holder, comprising a helical spring having coils of gradually-increasing diameter, a screw passing through the outer coil and engaging with the end of the peg, the inner larger coil bearing against the peg-box, and an extension from said inner coil for engaging against another peg, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL A. GREGG.
