KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That we, J. W. Hows and J'. K. BARTON, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Poppers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full,` olea-r, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a. part of this speeieatiomin whichl Figure 1 represents a. view of the bottom, rear, and one side of the pepper, and
Figure 2 represents a rear view of the popper, and a part of the metal handle, as will be more fully explained l hereafter. To enable those skilled in the art to which our invention belongs to make and use the same, we will. proceed to. describe it more in detail. i
In the drawings, the part marked A represents the corn-receptacle, made of wire cloth, and B a. section of the wooden handle, which has heretofore 'been usually fastened to the rear 'part C, by means of two pieces of l l strap-iron one end of one. piece being fastened to the upper side of the handle, and then extended over thetop 'of the receptacle, and bent down upon the inside, to be fastened by a rivet to the bent end of the other piece, which is fastened to the under side ofthe handle. When the handle is thus fastened, the receptacle is not supported in a proper manner, while the connection is very liable to give out, and frequently the wire cloth isbroken by the rivet which fastens the ends ofthe metal straps to the rear ofthe receptacle JL To ohviate the foregoing and other objections, ,we fasten the wooden handle B to the receptacle A, by means of four wires a a a a. The wires aa are made or bent to it the rear and bottom of the receptacle A, while their front ends are bent up and clinched or hooked into the wire cloth forming the front of the receptacle. The wires a a are bent to the right and left, and their ends bpassed through holes in the metal binding D of the receptacle A, and then up through holes .in the metal binding -E of the cover, after which they are turned or bent down in hook-form, as fully shown in -the drawings.'V The rear ends of all thcwires are twisted together, as
shown at F, and which wires, when so twistedtogether, may be driven into the-endoi` the wooden handle B, or they may be extended to such length as to form a metal handle. We prefer, however, to extend-them only to such a length as to form a suitable shank, the end of which is tobe drivenintoth'woodenlhandle B, as indicated in the drawings. By our improvements, a. strong handle is formed, whiletwo Vof thewires a a, which form a part of the handle, are made to diverge and pass under the receptacle,`as shown at c c, and thus form protectors to the wire cloth whenthe receptacle is set upon a stove. The ends of the other two wires ala', while they hold the rear of the receptacle securely inplaee, also serve as hinges to tho cover. It will be observed that the wires a a, a a' are` made to form the connection between the receptacle A and handle E, while thetwo former are made to answer as stays to the back and front of the receptacle A, andalso as protectors to the bottom of the pepper, and the two latter wires a a are made to answer as strong supports te the rear of the reeeptecle A, and also as hinges to the cover. Again, it will be noticed that the connection of thehandle with the pepper is such that there-is not that constant strain and great wear upon thewire cloth, which is the case when the handle is fastened to thepopper in the usual manner. Our improvements are alike applicable to round poppers. l
Having described eur improvements in corn-poppers, what we claim therein as new, and of our invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, ise 1. The combination ofthe twisted wires a a a a', with the handle B, and receptacle A, .substantiallyes and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of the wires a a', with handle B, receptacle A, and cover of the same, as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination of the wires a a a a with each other, receptacle A, and cover of same, as shown and described.
J. W. HOWE, J. K. BARTON.
