HAROLD EMERY JONES, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
RESPIRATOR,
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,470, dated January 13, 1903.
Application filed September 5, 1902. Serial No. 122,147. (No model.)
T0 at whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD EMERY JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Respirators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinventiomsuch as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction ina respirator, the object being to provide a device of this character which will fit the face so closely around the mouth and nose as to preclude the admission of air except through the perforations provided therefor, and which will also be so fiatas not to be easily displaced by contact with the pillow when the patient is asleep, and which is very advantageous in other respects.
My invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts here inafter fully described and claimed. 7
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a respirator constructed in accordance with my invention.' Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line 4 4' of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail section, on an enlarged scale, on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
My said device consists of a shell A of irregular contour and outline, the upper part of which is adapted to receive the nose and the lower part of which is adapted to fit over the mouth. The edge B of said shell is lined with an elastic material, such as rubber tubing or felt, and is designed to accord with the contour of the face, so as to fit the same closely without hard pressure, so as to preclude the admission of air except through the perforations provided therefor. The lower or mouth portion of said shell A is provided with a large number of perforations O for the admission of air, and hinged to the outer face of said lower ,portion is a second concavoconvex shell D of greater depth, the edge of which closely fits the outer face of said lower portion of the shell A around said perforations 0. The said shell D is also provided with perforations E and is adapted to receive an absorbent material adapted to be moistened with a medicinal compound through which the air breathed by the patient must As in respiration exhalation is far more rapid than inhalation it is necessary for the comfort of the patient that exhalation be rendered as easy as possible, and hence the exhaust-valves H are very important. These valves also serve to prevent the exhaled air, with its impurities, from passing through the medicated absorbent and affecting thelatter.
My device is held in place by means of three bands I, J, and K, the two first of which pass around underneath the ears and the latter of which passes over the top of the head and joins the two first at the base of the skull. 1
In order to render the adjustment in position of my respirator easy, I have provided clasps L on the respirator, one on each side of the lower portion and one on the upper end of same, each of which consists of a lever M, having a serrated j awN and pivotally mounted between its ends on a shaft 0, mounted in projections P on said shell A. On'each of said shafts O is coiled a spring Q, which engages the leverM and normally holds the jaw N down upon the shell A. The ends of the bands are passed underneath the shafts O and between the shell A and jaws N and are ongaged by the latter.. By drawing the ends of size immediately below the eyes are proportionately less than near the point of the nose, and hence it is far more easy to make the respirator fit closely all over. It is also essential that the entire device be made asfiat' as possible, so as to avoid displacement while the patient is asleep, for if it projects very far the patient in turning from side to side will obviously soon displace the respirator. The appearance of a flat device is also better than of one which projects far out from the face.
My said device is also excellently adapted for use by firemen for enabling them to pass through smoke and by workmen in places where there is a great deal of fine dust, as in planing-mills, grinding and sand-blast shops, due.
I claim as my invention- 1. A respirator comprising a shell of irregular outline adapted to cover the nose and mouth and so formed as to follow the contour of the face around the nose and mouth, a lining of soft, flexible material on the edge of said respirator adapted to ease the pressure on the face, two concavo-convex portions in said respirator adapted respectively to receive the nose and lips, perforations in the mouth portion of said respirator, a hinged perforated receptacle on said mouth portion adapted to receive an absorbent for medicine, and bands for securing said respirator in place.
2. A respirator comprising a shell of irregular outline adapted to cover the nose and mouth and so formed as to follow the contour of the face around the nose and mouth, a lining of soft, flexible material on the edge of said respirator adapted to ease the pressure on the face, two ooncavo-convex portions in said respirator adapted respectively to receive the nose and lips, perforations in the mouth portion of said respirator, a hinged perforated receptacle on said mouth portion adapted to receive an absorbent for medicine, valve-controlled openings in the lower end of the nose portion through which exhaled air is exhausted, and bands for securing said respirator in place.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HAROLD EMERY JONES.
